Kenmo/Getty Images Add Jalopnik on Google: Google Discover While the top trim of every sports/muscle car usually gets the most notice, sometimes forgoing a little bit of equipment results in a very strong value and, crucially, a vehicle that's still tremendously fun to drive. The 982-generation Porsche 718 Cayman earned (and continues to earn) a ton of acclaim in GT4 and GT4 RS guise, but the significantly less-expensive Cayman GTS was/is still huge fun behind the wheel. On the American front, various generations of the Ford Mustang Cobra and Shelby are often the stuff of dreams, far above a base-spec V6 or turbo-four — though, it must be said that the latter equipped with the High Performance Package was a very good time. But where there's a bridge (or Camaro) to gap, the Ford Mustang Mach 1 was resurrected twice to sit in the Goldilocks zone — meaning, just right — still offering substantial engine and suspension tweaks but at a more reasonable price over top trims. Ford first resurrected the Mach 1 in 2003 and then again in 2021, which gave enthusiasts (especially Millennials) one sweet-driving 'Stang. And what a badge to continue: The original Mach 1 could've been had back in 1969 with the 428-cubic-inch Cobra Jet engine making 335 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, it got blacked out bits of bodywork, chrome accents, tweaked suspension, and nicer interior features. With hot looks and the potential to be a real ground-pounder, it was situated between a run-of-the-mill model and Shelby. Let's discuss how the revived Mach 1s followed suit. The New Edge got edgier Ford We point out Millennials when discussing the Mach 1's rebirths because the first one hit the market when a lot of us were getting our drivers' licenses. Then, the second came along when we were into our 30s and 40s, possessing enough disposable income to sign the pink slip. And the "New Edge" Mach 1 really was something to yearn for back then. There's just something about '90s and early '00s Ford Modular V8s. Its heart was an aluminum head 4.6-liter V8 shared with the Cobra of the era, sans Cobra supercharger, but still possessing twin camshafts in each bank. Though, the intake units were better-breathing fare from Ford's 5.4-liter V8, and on the business end, port-matched exhaust manifolds and a freer-breathing exhaust system were bolted up. Power was rated at 305 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque, and it expressed its higher output over the standard GT (260 and 302, respectively) by sporting a shaker hood. What a cool throwback to the '60s/'70s muscle-car era. The chassis got plenty of goodies, too, including re-valved Tokico dampers, stiffer half-inch lowering springs, bespoke front and rear sway bars, and factory subframe connectors to stiffen everything up even further. Reviewers dug its increased composure and more refined ride quality and definitely saw the potential in its tuning for either strip or circuit work. The Mach 1 might not have had the Cobra's supercharger-enhanced 390 hp and 390 pound-feet of torque, but it was still plenty potent. Sadly, it only lasted from 2003 to 2004. The most recent Mach 1 Peter Nelson/Jalopnik The S550 generation's Mach 1 was sold between 2021 and 2023 and followed a similar borrow-parts-from-here-and-there recipe, such as using the Shelby GT350's intake manifold atop its 5.0-liter V8, resulting 480 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, 20 more horses than the GT but the same amount of torque. Then, it got the Shelby GT350's sweet-shifting Tremec six-speed manual transmission, and the Mach 1 got its own special tuning in regards to its MagneRide dampers and steering, as well stiffer front springs and sway bars. If one would rather have a 10-speed automatic, that got its own bespoke tuning in the Mach 1 plus a cooler for sturdier track duty. Then, besides badging, the New Edge and S550 Mach 1s got bespoke blacked-out exterior graphics to set them apart. It's similar to what H.B. Halicki was up to when customizing the original Eleanor from "Gone In 60 Seconds" to look more like a Mach 1. Anyone who digs a V8 rear-wheel drive sports/muscle/pony car wouldn't complain about having more options. The legendary Mach 1 badge was resurrected twice to be a good middle ground between standard GT and higher-dollar Shelby and Cobra fare, and it fit the bill well.
