If you love the idea of going through a job interview to buy a car, Ford is about to reopen the opportunity you've been looking for. Everyone on the approved list for the Ford Mustang GTD must have gotten a car already, because Ford is getting ready to open up another application window. That will happen April 17, to mark the Ford Mustang's 62nd birthday. Dust Off The Ol' Resumé Ford Potential customers who are interested in buying the Ford Mustang GTD can fill in their details on Ford's site now, ahead of the window for applications reopening. If you do, the Mustang GTD team will send you a reminder a few days before. You'll also get status updates after the summer. The first round of applications filled the build slots for the first couple years of production. This round will cover three years of cars built for Ford by performance shop Multimatic in Canada. That will probably make it the final application period for the GTD, unless Ford decides to build a new one based on the future Ford Mustang. We've reached out to ask Ford how many vehicles will be available as part of this run. We've seen claims of around 300 per year, putting this run at close to 1,000 units.Ford Making potential customers go through an extensive application process is part of Ford's effort to prevent buyers from flipping their GTD (for profit, not on the roof). It also wants to make sure that owners will show off and use their GTD, so the company is leaning toward buyers who can show they'll do just that.Last time, Ford asked for a video showing why you would be a "good Ford Mustang GTD owner." It also asked for links to social media content and if you had anything else to say that would help sway Ford's club bouncers. Ford Wants To Stop Flippers Ford Ford did the same thing in 2016 when it relaunched a small run of Ford GT supercars. The application asked multiple questions, ranging from whether you had other Ford GTs, other supercars, or other fast Fords already in the stable. It also asked about how much you drove your existing performance vehicles, and wanted videos and photos to prove you were worthy. The other big step Ford took to stop flippers was in the contract, notably with a clause that said you're not allowed to resell in the first 24 months. It said the same thing about the GT, and Ford is serious about it. The automaker ultimately sued John Cena for flipping his Ford GT.Even though the Chevrolet Corvette came out and beat it not long after, Ford is still proud to say the GTD was the first American car to break the seven-minute barrier at the Nürburgring. The GTD has an 815-horsepower supercharged V8 with dry sump oiling for performance and reliability. Bigger brakes, more downforce, and lightweight materials including carbon fiber and titanium all help make this faster than any Mustang that doesn't have P-51 before its name.Make it to the next step, and one of Ford's Mustang GTD concierges will reach out. They'll help you with ordering and customizing your car, and arranging one of Ford's extra-special deliveries. We've reached out to ask Ford how many vehicles will be available as part of this run.
