Track-only supercar clocks 6:15.59, fastest ever for an American OEMThere’s a new sheriff in town. Ford says its track-only GT Mk IV just set the record for fastest American car around the famed Nordschleife. The 800-plus-hp GT Mk IV turned a 6:15.977 lap of the 12.9-mile circuit, says Ford, putting it third overall among all recorded Nürburgring laps and making it the quickest internal-combustion-powered car. The lap was set by factory driver Frédéric Vervisch, a Nürburgring 24 Hours winner, in the limited-production car. That time puts the GT Mk IV in rare company. Only a handful of vehicles have delved deeper into 6-minute territory. While it’s acknowledged that ’Ring records are difficult to compare given varying classifications and conditions, the outright leaderboard is dominated by purpose-built machines such as the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo and Volkswagen ID.R, both of which set laps well below six minutes in non-production configurations.Among production-based vehicles, the current standard remains in the low 6:30s, with cars like the Mercedes-AMG One (6:35.183) and Porsche 911 GT2 RS MR among the quickest street-legal entries.Ford says the Mk IV is the last version we’ll get of the latest Ford GT program, with just 67 units planned. Built by Multimatic, it features a heavily revised twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, a longer wheelbase, race-spec suspension, and a dramatically extended “long-tail” aero package designed for maximum downforce.Ford also pointed out that the lap places the GT Mk IV ahead of rival American efforts, including high-performance Chevrolet Corvette variants in similar track-focused categories.
