BMW is bringing SAE Level 2 partially automated driving to urban environments. Starting in 2027, the Munich-based automaker will roll out new navigation-guided assist functions that cover the entire spectrum, from motorways and rural roads to city centres. The launch will begin in Germany, with other countries to follow gradually.
This expansion is made possible by integrating the system with BMW Maps’ route guidance. While the City Assistant already automates stopping and restarting at traffic lights, the technology will handle significantly more complex manoeuvres in urban traffic from 2027. With active destination guidance, the vehicle will independently position itself on multi-lane roads, make turns, and navigate roundabouts. Priority situations at intersections will also be detected and processed by the sensor system.
The legal requirements for Level 2 systems remain a prerequisite. The assist functions will operate only as long as an in-cabin camera detects an attentive person at the wheel. The basis for this is the Europe-wide provisions of UN Regulation No. 171 (DCAS Series 02). From 2027, these regulations will, for the first time, permit assist systems to autonomously suggest and initiate driving manoeuvres in urban traffic. An independent technical service has already successfully completed the required real-world road tests. Official regulatory approval is expected in early 2027.
Driver and assistant can operate simultaneously
To facilitate seamless use while driving, the system incorporates a feature called Symbiotic Drive. This ensures that automated driving does not abruptly disengage if the driver actively steers, accelerates, or brakes. Instead, the system adapts smoothly to the driver’s individual style. Even in emergency interventions, such as lane-keeping assist, sensors analyse steering behaviour and gaze direction. The vehicle will intervene correctively only if it unintentionally drifts out of lane or a collision is imminent.
To ensure the driver retains an overview of all processes, BMW’s Panoramic iDrive displays all essential status messages under the windscreen. On the infotainment screen, a new view provides a three-dimensional summary of the route guidance, the vehicle’s surroundings via sensors, and the currently active assist systems.
The hardware required for the functional update will be integrated into all new BMW iX3, BMW iX4, BMW X5, BMW 3 Series, and BMW 7 Series models. Customers do not need to commit at the time of purchase, as the functions can be retroactively activated and unlocked via over-the-air software updates. In its official announcement, BMW has not yet disclosed specific pricing for the new City expansion from 2027. Existing comprehensive Level 2 packages currently range from approximately €1,000 to €5,000 euros, depending on the vehicle class and booking model, or are available as a subscription for a limited period (e.g., €1,500 euros for four years).
