BMW M Boss Wants to Bring Back the Legendary M1Heritage Images - Getty ImagesBMW has built plenty of impressive high-performance cars over the years. However, the M1 produced from 1978 to 1981 is its only true supercar. That may soon change. During Le Mans weekend, BMW M CEO Frank van Meel and BMW M Head of Design Oliver Heilmer told BMW Blog they've been dreaming of building a modern M1.Most of the nearly half-hour-long conversation centered around the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse. After all, the car is expected to be the first fully electric M model in BMW history. That is certainly big news. But in the final couple of minutes of the interview, a question from the BMW community was asked."If you both had to develop a dream car outside of current vehicle offerings, money no object, you can get it approved tomorrow, what would it be?" Heilmer answered first without hesitation and said the M1. Then, van Meel quickly piggybacked on the answer and said that he too would build an M1.AdvertisementAdvertisementBut van Meel clarified that although he loves the original M1, he would love to do an all-new one. We are confident that most enthusiasts would also love to see a new BMW supercar. We are also confident that a new M1 would not feature a naturally aspirated inline-six engine or pop-up headlights like the original. But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be an epic supercar.BMWThis isn't the first time BMW has hinted at a new M1. In 2008, the company unveiled the BMW M1 Homage at Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original. Some styling cues from this car made it to the production version of the BMW i8. If a new M1 were to be developed, there's a good chance it'd follow the Neue Klasse design language and utilize an electrified powerplant.Of course, all of this is just speculation and dreaming at this point. Although it is encouraging that the boss of the BMW M division shares these same dreams. Perhaps one day he can turn it into a reality. You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
