Best Subcompact SUVs | 2026 Subcompact Crossovers Rated | CarBuzzBefore the age of the subcompact SUV, the term sports utility vehicle referred almost exclusively to tough, large vehicles that guzzled gas and wobbled around nervously when confronted with a twisty road. Times have changed and now smaller body styles and thriftier engines are becoming the norm. They still retain the raised ride height and bold aesthetic that so many shoppers find irresistible. Of course, the other advantage to these diminutive SUVs is cost; many are affordable and practical alternatives to traditional sedans and hatchbacks. Our reviews of the best subcompact SUVs of 2026 will help you determine which are worth your hard-earned cash.Vehicles are assigned a BuzzScore in relation to their direct segment competitors, and as such, subcompact SUV models in our rankings, while similarly scored, do not necessarily compete directly against one another. For example, the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 and Chevrolet Trailblazer are both subcompacts, but are in no way considered rivals.Find out more about how the BuzzScore ratings work here. These lists are continuously updated with the latest BuzzScores and vehicles as they become available. Genesis GV60 Starting our list of the best subcompact SUVs is the Genesis GV60 - a small SUV with a reasonably luxurious driving experience. While there are a handful of luxury models on this list, most of them start at reasonable prices. For example, the GV60 is available in four trims, and it starts at $52,525 before destination. That's not cheap, but makes sense for a luxury EV. You can always lease one, if the depreciation scares you off. The base model is powered by a single electric motor that makes 225 horsepower. On the inside, there's room for up to five occupants, or a maximum cargo capacity of 54.7 cubic feet. Rear-seat passengers get 37.6 inches of legroom and 38.1 inches of headroom."Inside the Genesis GV60 there is evidence that the brand snagged itself a Rolls-Royce designer, with the two-spoke steering wheel and plush materials, particularly in the cream color of our tester. In this shade, though, we found the steering wheel a step too far in terms of nailing the opulence factor: It feels too try-hard for us, but in another color leather, it feels lets pretentious."- Ian Wright, Senior Road Tester, CarBuzz BMW X1 BMW is known for its sports cars and luxury amenities, but even this automaker has a hand in the realm of small SUVs. The BMW X1 is a top rated subcompact SUV, and as small as the brand's SUVs get. Buyers can choose between two variants: the xDrive28i starts at $43,200, and finds power from a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 that makes 241 horsepower and can sprint to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. Moving to the M35i means spending at least $52,400, but you'll get a 312-horsepower 2.0L turbo I4. Either way, the X1 can carry up to five people, with those in the rear seats getting 37 inches of legroom and 39.4 inches of headroom. Cargo space reaches 57.2 cubic feet behind the front row. The current model looks great, but a facelift is coming soon."BMW didn't just improve the straight-line acceleration; everything about the X1 driving experience is refined. The steering is sharper than the previous generation, and the ride is smoother (especially with the optional adaptive suspension) thanks to the increased length. The whole car feels more playful and no longer punishes occupants with a firm ride."- Jared Rosenholtz, Editor-At-Large, CarBuzz Volvo XC40 The Volvo XC40 is a luxurious, but more humble compact SUV than any BMW. Volvo tends to follow a simpler, more minimal design language that the XC40 carries well. It's available in three trim levels, the Core, Plus, and Ultra; starting prices are $39,900, $43,900, and $51,250, respectively. Regardless of which trim you choose, the XC40 always carries up to five people, and its cargo capacity reaches 57.5 cubic feet behind the front row. Passengers in the second row have 36.1 inches of legroom and 39.1 inches of headroom. Heated front seats and dual-zone climate control are standard in every trim, which helps place it highly among our subcompact SUV rankings. Mazda CX-30 Budget buyers can rejoice in the Mazda CX-30 subcompact crossover SUV. since it delivers a somewhat upscale driving experience while starting at a far more reasonable price. Mazda can't quite decide if it's a true luxury brand or not, but that's fine with us if it means having nice cars for cheap. The CX-30 had deliberately low sales figures recently, since Mazda decided to limit the number of units imported to the United States. That said, you can still pick one up for a minimum of $25,975 today. It seats five people, with those in the second row fitting into 36.3 inches of legroom and 38.3 inches of headroom. Folding the second row down opens up 45.2 cubic feet of cargo space."There, the i-Active AWD system got to show its chops when there was no choice but to put one side of the car through deep puddles and when tight roads had mud and gravel washed across them. The CX-30 remained consistent and became confidence-inspiring as it shifted torque around to just the places at the right time to help maintain control, stability, and forward momentum."- Ian Wright, Senior Road Tester, CarBuzz Alfa Romeo Tonale It's almost easy to forget that Alfa Romeo makes new cars still, since there are only three models. One of them is a luxurious compact SUV: the Tonale subcompact crossover. This model comes with your choice between a standard gas engine and a hybrid powertrain that makes more horsepower. The gas-only model starts at $39,785 before destination and options; it comes with a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 that makes 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Five people can fit inside, with those in the back row getting 38 inches of legroom and 38.2 inches of headroom. The trunk can hold 27 cu. ft. of cargo, then folding the second row down expands that space to 54.7 cubic feet. Kia Seltos Not only is the Kia Seltos among the cheapest subcompact SUVs on this list, it's one of the least-expensive new cars on sale in general. Buyers will have to sacrifice some amenities and comfort features found in pricier models, but the Seltos makes up for it with good styling, reasonable fuel economy, and affordability. The SX trim starts its lineup at $23,790 with a 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes 147 hp, but upgrading to the top trim for $31,490 gets you a 1.5L turbo I4 that makes 190 hp. On the inside, five occupants can fit, with the second row offering 38 inches of legroom and 38.4 inches of headroom. As for cargo space, this small Kia SUV has 62.8 cubic feet behind the front row."The majority of the driving experience is great. The steering is accurate, tightening more in sport mode, and the ride is compliant on bumpy roads. We drove the Seltos on the highway for over three hours, and the Bose audio system has no trouble drowning out the minimal road noise, even at a medium volume."- Jared Rosenholtz, Editor-At-Large, CarBuzz Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 We're not here to argue about whether the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 is a true AMG or not, but we will say it's an excellent compact SUV overall. It's luxurious, sporty, and has good styling to wrap it all together. This little Mercedes model starts at $58,550, which places it in competition with the BMW X1 at the top of this list. We feel as though it puts up a good fight with its 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 hybrid that makes a combined 302 horsepower for a 5.1-second 0-60 sprint. It's comfortable and well-equipped inside for all five occupants. Those in the back seats get 38 inches of legroom and 38.1 inches of headroom, while cargo space maxes out at 50.5 cubic feet. Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class SUV While we would go for the sportier variant of the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class SUV we just talked about above, the standard variants are just as comfortable. This is still a small, relatively affordable SUV, as far as luxury models go. Mercedes-Benz offers a single standard trim, the GLA 250, which starts at $41,500. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 mild hybrid that makes 221 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Moving to the interior, we find the same dimensions as the AMG variant: the second row has 38 inches of legroom and 38.1 inches of headroom. Cargo space also maxes out at 50.5 cu. ft. behind the front row. Nissan Kicks Nissan joins the races with the Kicks subcompact SUV - we would call it the best subcompact SUV for those on the smallest budget. It fits in with other affordable models, like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Hyundai Venue, and the now-discontinued Kia Soul. We like this generation of the Kicks so much, though, that we named it our Budget Car of the Year in 2025. It's available in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, with the FWD models starting at $22,430 for the S trim. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes 141 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque. That's not a lot, but you can't expect too much at this price point. The interior features room for five people, with those in the second row having 34.5 inches of legroom and 38.5 inches of headroom. Cargo space reaches 60 cubic feet behind the front row."It's a value proposition that also has personality, is genuinely comfortable, looks great, and is fun to drive. And, if you go for the SR or SV, one that's also bang up to date with technology and doesn't lack connectivity features."- Ian Wright, Senior Road Tester, CarBuzz BMW X2 Rounding off our list of the best subcompact SUVs is the BMW X2, with a BuzzScore of 8.3 out of 10. It's only slightly larger than the X1 (by about an inch longer), but it handles differently and has a sloped roof in the back. BMW offers two versions to buyers; the base model xDrive28i starts at $44,700, and the M35i starts at $53,900. Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 that makes 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque in the base model, but the M35i gets tuned for 312 horsepower for a 5.2-second 0-60 sprint. On the inside, rear-seat passengers have 36.7 inches of legroom and 37.1 inches of headroom. The X2 holds 51.7 cubic feet of cargo behind the front row."Though some buyers will miss the buttons, others will enjoy what is a more open-feeling and spacious cabin. The center console has a lot more space, including a wireless charger with a lap bar to hold your phone in place. The few remaining buttons live on a central armrest, putting them within reach and the rest of the cabin is packed with features."- Jared Rosenholtz, Editor-At-Large, CarBuzz The Characteristics Of Subcompact Crossovers There are the qualities that define these vehicles: Size: The first thing you’ll notice about these cars is that they have tiny dimensions. This allows them to get around town with greater ease than their more sizeable brethren. This has a positive effect on efficiency. Safety: Apart from the confidence you get from a higher driving position, even the smallest crossovers boast incredible safety ratings. On top of that, the standard driver-assistance suite is usually quite generous. All of this combines to make them perfect for small families. Practicality: Even with their smaller bodies, subcompacts still supply a decent amount of space for people and stuff. This means that daily commutes and errands are dispatched with ease. Many are also available with AWD, further extending their ability to get you around in tricky weather. Affordability: While there are certainly a few pricey luxury options out there, subcompact crossovers are generally among the most well-priced vehicles in the USA. This also makes them ideal for electrification, since the added cost won’t be as off-putting. What To Consider Before Buying Despite their popularity, these miniature cars are not for everyone. You should definitely consider their strengths and weaknesses before getting behind the wheel: Pros Cheap to own and run Safe and family-friendly Ideal for maneuvering around town Surprisingly practical for their size Cons Usually low on power and performance Not as imposing as their larger brethren Very few actually have what it takes to go off-road What is the difference between a compact and a subcompact? The short answer is size. A subcompact SUV is obviously smaller, but the official description is a vehicle with between 85-99 cubic feet of combined passenger and cargo space. This means that it is actually possible for a compact to be smaller on the outside, so long as it has more room in the cabin.Sources: Genesis, BMW, Volvo, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Alfa Romeo, Kia, Nissan
