The best cargo-haulers you can buyIf you want the most cargo space for your buck, nothing beats a minivan. But if you want cargo space without the dowdy image, it’ll have to be an SUV. With their tall bodies and squared-off rear end, SUVs excel at swallowing up large suitcases, strollers, garden equipment, or anything else that comes with moving around a family and their paraphernalia. The SUVs on this list all have massive, practical trunks. We’ve ranked them from smallest to largest based on the amount of space behind the second row with the third row folded. If a long-wheelbase version of a specific model is available with extra space, we’ve only ranked that model once, based on the variant with the most space. Here’s a rundown of America’s five best load-luggers.5. Chevrolet Tahoe: 72.6 Cubic Feet One of two Chevrolets on this list, the Tahoe has one of the most cavernous interiors around. It already has as much space behind the third row as some compact crossovers, so for a regular shopping trip, the third row can stay upright. With the third and second rows folded, the Tahoe has a long, wide, minivan-like area to transport large or awkwardly shaped items like snowboards. An independent rear suspension assists in keeping the load floor flat, so objects can slide in and out easily. 4. Ford Expedition Max: 84.5 Cubic Feet At 221.9 inches in length, the Ford Expedition Max is the largest SUV from the Blue Oval. Its sizable footprint frees up nearly 85 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, whereas the standard Expedition can only handle 69.9.Space behind the third row is commendable, too, at 37.4 cubic feet. The cargo area can be easily accessed via a split tailgate, and the third row can be conveniently folded electrically. If you don’t mind driving something that feels a bit like a bus in some tight spots, the Expedition is a great family vehicle and one of the SUVs with the most trunk space.3. GMC Yukon XL: 93.6 Cubic Feet Closely related to the Chevy Suburban, the GMC Yukon XL nearly matches that vehicle in terms of cargo space. There’s a massive 93.6 cubic feet behind the second row, easily bigger than the 72.5 in the regular Yukon. Behind the first row, almost nothing in the SUV world can touch the Yukon XL. The 144.5 cubic feet of space is simply enormous, and this generation’s independent rear suspension has helped by lowering the floor. As with other SUVs here, power-folding back seats are available to make it easier to configure the cabin for either passengers or cargo. 2. Chevrolet Suburban: 93.8 Cubic Feet Like the GMC above, Chevy’s largest SUV is a bit of a monster at 226.3 inches in length. It has just 0.2 cubic feet more space behind the third row than the related Yukon XL, and its interior has a minivan-like 144.7 cubic feet with the back rows folded flat—it’s the SUV with the most cargo space behind the first row.We managed to fit several sizable suitcases in the back of a Suburban when we conducted our luggage test. In fact, you’ll have a hard time finding enough cargo to fill up this supersized SUV. It’s also one of the few SUVs on the market that can seat up to nine occupants—but expect hefty gas bills for both V8s.1. Cadillac Escalade ESV Cadillac has multiple full-size SUVs, including the Escalade, Escalade IQ and IQL, and Escalade-V. None of them can quite match the Escalade ESV’s cargo-carrying capabilities, though. Behind the second row, it just edges the Suburban with more space than any other SUV.The Escalade ESV has slightly less space than the Suburban with both back rows folded, but it equals the amount of space in the Chevy behind the third row; the Yukon XL, Escalade ESV, and Suburban are the SUVs with the largest amount of cargo space behind the 3rd row. In short, there isn’t much that won’t fit in an ESV, but in all honesty, the standard Escalade will be large enough for most people. It helps that this is one of the most luxurious full-size SUVs in the world, too.Honorable Mentions Outside of the top 5, these SUVs also offer a massive amount of space behind the second row:Cadillac Escalade IQL: 75.4 cubic feetCadillac Escalade: 72.9 cubic feetGMC Yukon: 72.5 cubic feetLexus LX 600: Up to 70.1 cubic feetJeep Grand Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer L: 70.8 cubic feetFord Expedition: 69.9 cubic feetCadillac Escalade IQ: 69.1 cubic feetHonda Pilot: Up to 60.1 cubic feetWhile almost every SUV on this list is a full-size model the Pilot is the only midsize model. That makes it the midsize SUV with the largest cargo space behind the second row.Final ThoughtsLarge SUVs with this much interior space are more popular in the U.S. than in most other regions, they do come with high price tags, often cumbersome driving dynamics, and substantial fuel bills. If you still want lots of cargo space without those drawbacks, we recommend a minivan.
