However, the North American side of the company is looking for ways to bring in more station wagons stateside. So for any wagon enthusiasts out there who aren't just motoring journalists, this sounds like great news.Among the German luxury big three, Audi has traditionally offered the strongest selection of wagons in the U.S. We can go all the way back to the 70s when Audi officially arrived in America and introduced the Fox wagon in 1972. The 5000 Avant carried the torch after that, later renamed the 100 Avant and, eventually, A6 Avant. It was also the first German brand to offer a compact wagon stateside with the A4 Avant, as BMW and Mercedes did not offer their respective small wagons in America in the late-'90s. Let's not forget the S4 and S6 Avants that were offered back in the day, as well as the RS 6AudiMore Coming Soon?We already know that the A6 Allroad is coming to the U.S, and it's safe to say that the redesigned RS 6 will also be offered as an Avant in America once it's out. More recently, it was confirmed by Filip Brabec, Audi of America's senior vice president of product management, that more wagons could land stateside, with the operative word being 'could.'AdvertisementAdvertisementSpeaking to Road & Track, Brabec said, "Part of the Audi brand at times is to have the right sort of offering for the enthusiast. We're not sort of the vanilla brand that will just have three or four SUVs and a couple sedans and call it a day. We want to be that brand that really pushes the envelope and has something for its enthusiasts."But before anyone gets too excited, there is a caveat. Audi can't just snap its fingers and suddenly bring its Avants to the U.S. A case for expanding the wagon lineup needs to be made first before anything else. "At the end of the day, it's always a little bit the business case, and 'can we make it work,' and things like that. That's what guys like me do. But we definitely are always looking for opportunities, because it is a strength that we can play with [customers] that get it," added Brabec.AudiCrucial RegionsFor Audi's wagon expansion to succeed, it'll need to focus on key regions that buy more wagons than others. California and the Pacific Northwest have been a good market for these kinds of cars, as well as the New England region. A6 Allroad sales have been traditionally strong in snowier climes, although it has been a good seller in New York City according to Brabeck's interview with Road & Track.Turns out, the Allroad's size is just right for the city's standard parking rates. Those who have one aren't subject to the same charges as, say, a Q5 or Q7, both of which are required to pay SUV rates, which are more expensive. Inadvertently, NYC is doing its part in justifying Audi's decision to keep selling wagons in America.Possible ModelsAudi effectively pioneered the hot wagon genre, and its high-performance longroofs have a strong following to this day. The success of the RS 6 Avant may reverse the initial decision not to bring the RS 5 Avant to the U.S. This may also open up the possibility of the S5 Avant landing stateside. The performance wagon may be a niche that doesn't bring in hundreds of thousands of sales, but it's a space that Audi occupies rather well, along with BMW in more recent years.AdvertisementAdvertisementGiven the popularity of Allroad models, this may also push Audi to develop a version for the A5 Avant.
