On a Saturday morning in Salt Lake City, two cars on State Street went through a dealership fence and wrecked a row of Audis that weren't going anywhere.By the dealership's own estimate, the damage runs well into six figures. The whole thing was recorded, and not by the dealership's cameras. KSL described both drivers as driving recklessly.Salt Lake City police said one driver made a sudden lane change and hit a Tesla.Both vehicles spun off the road and into the parking lot of an Audi dealership.Dealership managers told KSL the crash destroyed part of the fence, totaled three vehicles on the lot and left several others covered in broken glass and debris. KSL puts the total at five vehicles totaled.Police cited both drivers. One was ticketed for reckless driving. The other was cited for issues related to their driver's license and insurance.KSL's report didn't mention any injuries. The station also didn't say which driver got which citation, and neither will we. A citation is an accusation, not a conviction. Whatever happened on State Street will be settled in court, not in a comment section.The witnesses were TeslasAccording to KSL, the footage came from two Teslas on the road, and one of them was the car that got hit. That's worth noting. Most Teslas can save footage from their exterior cameras to a USB drive through the built-in Dashcam feature. So every Tesla in traffic is a possible witness, whether its owner planned on that or not.For the owner of the car that got hit, that recording is worth more than any witness statement. In a crash involving a sudden lane change, fault usually comes down to who was where and when. Video answers that question in a few seconds, before anyone has a chance to remember it differently. If your car doesn't record anything, a decent aftermarket dash cam costs less than most insurance deductibles. Police haven't released those details, so we're not going to guess.$15,000 of coverage against a six-figure billThe insurance side of this is where it gets painful. A dealership representative told KSL the damaged vehicles add up to roughly $300,000 to $400,000. The fence adds another $50,000 to $75,000, although the dealership's maintenance crew has already fixed it. Campbell said the total could approach half a million dollars.Now compare that with the legal minimum. Under Utah Code 31A-22-304, a Utah driver only has to carry $15,000 in property damage liability per accident. Plenty of drivers carry more, but $15,000 is the floor. That wouldn't cover the paint and trim on some of the cars in that lot.In practice, it usually plays out like this. The dealership's own inventory and property coverage pays first. That insurer then goes after the at-fault driver's policy to get its money back. If the at-fault driver's limits are lower than the damage, the difference becomes a personal debt for that driver. It follows them long after the traffic ticket is paid. If a driver in a crash like this turns out to have little or no coverage, the victims end up leaning on their own policies even harder.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe takeaway for everyone else: a $15,000 property damage minimum doesn't go far on a street lined with luxury-car lots. If you commute past dealerships on a busy road, raising your property damage limit is one of the cheapest upgrades you can make to your policy.What happens to the cars on the lotThe three cars the dealership says were totaled won't be sold as new. Inventory declared a total loss usually goes to the insurer and then into the salvage auction system, the business run by companies like Copart. From there it gets rebuilt, parted out or exported.The cars that were only "covered in glass and debris" are the ones buyers should think about. Minor damage to new inventory is often repaired and the car is sold as new. Disclosure rules for that kind of repair vary by state and usually depend on how much the repair cost. That's not a reason to avoid a particular dealership. It's a reason to ask any dealer a simple question before you sign: Has this specific car had any repair or refinishing since it left the factory? Get the answer in writing.The legal sideUtah defines reckless driving as operating a vehicle "in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property." It's a class B misdemeanor. That's a criminal charge, not a routine moving violation. The citation for license and insurance issues is a separate matter, and KSL didn't give specifics. Driving without required owner's security in Utah is also a class B misdemeanor with a $400 minimum fine for a first offense. The criminal case is only part of it, though. The civil side is about who pays for five wrecked cars and a fence, and it will probably take longer and cost more.The bottom lineNo one on that Audi lot was driving. The cars were parked, priced and waiting for buyers. One lane change, as police describe it, turned them into an insurance claim. The Teslas that caught it on camera are a reminder that more and more of what happens on the road gets recorded.
