The midsize Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is getting a refresh for 2027. Benz is flipping the script grille, giving it a starry-eyed motif along with new engines. Plus, this latest model trades an all-touch steering wheel for one with real buttons and knobs you can touch, and it will deliver a cloud-like ride. By that, we mean an air suspension with its settings changed using information it gets from the cloud. In addition to the updated GLE, we have details on the sleeker GLE coupe. There's also the AMG GLE 53, injecting quite a bit of performance into the equation. Here's everything you need to know. Small But Effective Facelift 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe (5)Mercedes-Benz doesn't break out its sales by model, but we do know that last year the GLE had its highest retail sales year ever. It's the perfect time to make it even more desirable with a refresh, but that refresh has to do the job of making you want it.The company claims that the refreshed GLE is very new. 3,000 new or revised pieces to be more specific, but it will grab your attention with just a few of them: the new grille, new star-accent headlights, and more stars in the taillights.Mercedes-Benz has flipped its grille, just like we've seen on some of its other recent refreshes. The grille is now wider at the top instead of the bottom, and the star sits big and bold in the middle of it. The thick chrome frame, which is dark-colored on the GLE Coupe, adds visual weight to the crossover. On the AMG model you'll find the company's Panamericana grille, and the Coupe has an illuminated main badge with plenty of other stars. Revised Engines All Around, More Power For Some 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 (39)Every GLE, including the coupe and AMG, get new or revised engines. The starting point is the GLE 350 SUV, which uses a 255-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo. Total output is unchanged, but it has an electric compressor for better low-end response, and it comes with a 48-volt mild hybrid generator.Next up is the GLE 450 with a 3.0-liter inline-six. It's optional for the SUV and standard for the coupe, delivering 375 hp. That number is the same as last year, but torque has jumped from 369 pound-feet to 413. It has a new cylinder head, and an electric compressor like the four-cylinder engine. After that is the new GLE 500e. The PHEV uses the 3.0-liter inline-six instead of the four-cylinder in last year's 450e PHEV. Now the SUV makes 322 hp, an increase of 74. The electric motor adds 181 hp to that, along with 354 lb-ft, with Benz claiming 66 miles of electric range on the WLTP cycle.Under the hood of the AMG GLE 53 is another 3.0-liter six. This one makes 443 hp and a matching torque figure, but it, too, is a PHEV. That motor brings the total to 577 hp and 553 lb-ft, half a second quicker than the old GLE 53.The only V8 is the GLE 580 SUV. The tweaked 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine makes 530 hp, 20 more than last year. Torque is up 15 lb-ft, and Mercedes-Benz says it is delivered more smoothly and efficiently. That includes a flat-plane crankshaft, a layout normally reserved for high-performance engines like you find in a Ferrari, or the high-strung Corvette Z06. Here, Mercedes-Benz is using it to improve emissions. Low Range 4x4 And Cloud-Based Suspension 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 (23)A new 4Matic system delivers more adjustable torque distribution than ever. It can send up to 100 percent to either axle as needed, using an electronic clutch in the transfer case. The new transfer case has one other truck up its sleeve, a low-range gear. A new generation of Airmatic suspension is available, one that uses vehicle-to-cloud reported information from other Mercedes-Benz vehicles to adjust its settings. The AMG 53 adds AMG tuning to the suspension but drops the cloud control. Expect it to be firmer than non-AMG models, with a lowered ride height and low-profile tires. On the V8-powered GLE 580, Mercedes-Benz's E-Active Body Control uses 48v motors to add even more suspension adjustment. This includes changing the anti-roll bar to alter spring forces, reducing roll and also countering pitch and lift during acceleration or braking. It can even adjust single-wheel ride heights, with the example of letting you raise one tire and extend the other three if one is stuck in a ditch. Superscreen Gets Even Bigger Mercedes-BenzAn interior shake-up includes an even super-er Superscreen – three 12.3-inch displays instead of two – combined with new materials to upgrade the cabin. That passenger screen is now standard, and the new operating system behind it has added ChatGPT to the virtual assistant and augmented reality for the head-up display. The new computer is water-cooled and Benz says it has enough processing power left in reserve for future upgrades.Last but not least, the steering wheel gains a rocker switch for controls on one side, and a metal roller switch for the volume on the other. And if there's nobody in the passenger seat, the GLE will project a star logo on the cushion. When will the new GLE and GLE Coupe (plus the AMG version of both) go on sale? Mercedes-Benz didn't say, but expect it mid-year, We expect pricing to be announced shortly before deliveries start.
