Now in its second generation, the subcompact luxury SUV has grown more refined and mature, and a possible 2027 refresh could bring its design and technology closer to BMW's newest models.AdvertisementAdvertisementLuxury subcompact SUV rivals include the Audi Q3, Acura ADX, and Lexus UX.What's NewBMW has not announced changes for the 2027 X2, but prototypes suggest a midcycle refresh is in development. Expected updates include Neue Klasse–inspired front-end styling and a redesigned cabin featuring BMW's iDrive X interface and Panoramic Vision display technology. Reports also point to possible changes for the performance model. This page will be updated with more insights and photos as information becomes available. What We ThinkThe 2027 X2 should remain a sporty, upscale alternative to the typical subcompact luxury SUV. Based on our experience with the current lineup, the model delivers lively performance, sharp responses, and a more refined, mature character than the generation it replaced.AdvertisementAdvertisementIts cabin feels modern and well finished, although the design is familiar and similar to BMW's other small vehicles. The coupelike roof also gives the X2 a more distinctive profile than the closely related X1, but it comes with some practical compromises. The performance-oriented M35i is entertaining on a winding road, yet its firm ride, hesitant low-speed behavior, and rough stop/start operation can make everyday driving less polished than expected. For most, the xDrive28i should prove to be the more balanced choice.A possible midcycle refresh could address some of those weaknesses while introducing newer technology. Until BMW confirms the 2027 model, however, we expect the X2's core appeal—and its compromises—to remain largely unchanged.Top-Ranked Competitors:Audi Q3Acura ADXLexus UXMotorTrend TestedThe current X2 xDrive28i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. In MotorTrend testing, it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, narrowly beating the 2026 Audi Q3 S Line Quattro, whose 2.0-liter turbo-four makes 255 hp and 273 lb-ft and reached 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe existing X2 M35i raises output to 312 hp while retaining the same torque figure, cutting the 0–60-mph time to 4.9 seconds. BMW is expected to introduce an updated performance model with the X2's midcycle refresh, although it may not arrive until the 2028 model year.MPGs and RangeFuel economy should remain close to the current model's figures. The xDrive28i is rated at 24/34 mpg city/highway with an estimated 400 miles of range, while the more powerful M35i returns 23/31 mpg and about 372 miles per tank. That would keep both versions ahead of the 2026 Q3 S Line's 22/29 mpg rating. The Audi still travels slightly farther between fill-ups, however, with an estimated 410 miles of range.Safety Ratings and FeaturesThe X2 did not earn an IIHS award in its most recent evaluation because it had not completed the full battery of tests, but it received Good ratings in every test it underwent.AdvertisementAdvertisementStandard driver-assists with every 2027 X2 should include:Automatic emergency brakingBlind-spot monitoringLane keepingParking assist automated parkingAutomatic high-beamsCargo Space and Interior RoomThe X2 offers slightly more cargo space behind the second row than the Audi Q3 and Acura ADX. It also provides more legroom than the Audi.TechnologyInfotainmentThe current X2 comes standard with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch touchscreen joined beneath BMW's curved display. BMW operating system 9 includes built-in navigation, voice controls, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and over-the-air software updates.Four USB-C ports, wireless phone charging, and 12-volt outlets in the center console and cargo area are also standard. A possible midcycle refresh could replace this setup with BMW's newer Panoramic iDrive interface, although the company has not confirmed any technology changes for the 2027 X2.Sound SystemThe current X2 comes standard with a six-speaker sound system; a 12-speaker Harman Kardon setup is also available.Available UpgradesAvailable upgrades should continue to include a head-up display, a surround-view camera system, and augmented-reality navigation.ValueStandard FeaturesThe 2027 X2 should retain a polished cabin with solid materials and supportive front seats. Expected standard conveniences include heated front seats, keyless entry, and a power liftgate.AdvertisementAdvertisementA panoramic moonroof, heated steering wheel, remote start, and an interior camera should also carry over, although BMW could revise feature packaging as part of a possible midcycle refresh.Recommended TrimFor most buyers, we'd recommend the X2 xDrive28i. Its turbo four-cylinder delivers strong acceleration, better fuel economy, and most of the same technology and luxury features as the M35i without the performance model's firmer ride or higher price. The M35i remains the choice for shoppers who prioritize speed and sharper handling, but the base version should provide the better balance of performance, comfort, and value.
