Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee MINI cars are meant to be fun. That may not have been the original premise of the car when first launched several decades ago, but it didn't take long for these diminutive hatchbacks to charm their way deep into owners' hearts. For the past few generations, fun has been at the forefront of every new-style MINI, especially the Cooper S and John Cooper Works ( JCW) models. Coupled with funky style and modern technology, these are joy-bringers. Highish prices and small interiors be damned: MINIs are smile inducers, none more so than my tester this week, the 2026 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible. Quick Take The 2026 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible continues the brand's tradition of motoring fun in a pint-size form. The raw handling and punchy engine are enhanced by a removable roof that keeps front seat occupants out of the wind while enjoying the fresh air. The John Cooper Works also adds the one feature we've been begging for the brand to add to the latest generation of vehicles – paddle shifters. With the ability to change our own gears, the satisfaction level only rises. If happiness is your thing, this is the ultimate MINI currently on sale. But it doesn't come cheap. What's New for 2026: Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee All-new last year, the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible enters the 2026 model year basically unchanged this year. Exterior Style: Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee A lot has been made about the MINI growing in size over the years, and compared to the original, the latest MINI is gargantuan. But, at 152.8 inches long and 68.7 inches wide, the 2027 John Cooper Works Convertible is still one of the smaller vehicles currently on sale in North America. My tester arrived in an incredible hue called Blazing Blue Metallic. Coupled with the black and grey Union Jack soft top roof, the car was a near-perfect spec for a MINI: lots of flash without being over the top. Completing the visual appeal is the cool single black exhaust outlet. Powertrain and Fuel Economy: Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee Under the hood of the John Cooper Works Convertible is the most potent version of MINI's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder available in a front-wheel drive format. Pumping out 228 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, it's coupled to a seven-speed sport dual-clutch transmission, with special emphasis on the sport since it differs from the seven-speed included in the regular Cooper and Cooper S models. When launched properly, the brand claims it can rip from 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 152 mph. The real-world feels back up these figures, as the engine produces good torque throughout the rpm range but is a bit top-heavy in terms of peak power. The exhaust still produces some pops and burbles, like JCW models of the past, but all modern MINIs are more grown-up, including this one. The obnoxious exhaust notes of old are long gone. Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee Now on to perhaps the best part of the John Cooper Works and what makes the price of entry worth it: paddle shifters. Unlike the regular Cooper or Cooper S models, which have no way to manually control the seven-speed dual clutch transmission, the JCW includes wheel-mounted paddle shifters with an optional manual mode. The paddles increase engagement exponentially, which increases fun. Especially when used with the JCW driving experience, which is "Go Kart" in other versions of the Mini Cooper. The seven-speed upshifts very quickly, but is a bit more delayed in downshifting than we expected for a DCT. Handling and Drivability: Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee The 2026 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible comes with the same 215/45R17 size tires mounted to 17-inch wheels like the less sporty version of the car. But the suspension set-up is unique to this model and immediately felt from behind the wheel. Even with a hefty-for-its-size curb weight of 3,197 pounds, the car is agile, quick to respond to inputs, and willing to be hustled hard. The car's rear quarters want to rotate during lift-off-throttle maneuvers through long sweeping corners. It hides the JCW's front-wheel drive roots so well. The differential further helps rotate the car fluidly, and the short wheelbase doesn't hurt either. Plus, this is a convertible, so the driver feels closer to the action and the elements with the roof down. I recall the ride quality of some JCW hatches from a decade ago as amongst the worst I ever encountered. With the 2026 Convertible, this isn't a concern anymore. The suspension is still quite firm, but not nearly as vertebrae-compressing as JCWs of old. Furthers the more grown-up character of the modern cars and it's wholly livable. The interior of the 2026 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible features Vescin/cloth upholstered seats that are heated up front, along with a heated steering wheel. There is ample space for front seat occupants, even with the top up, thanks to 39.8 inches of headroom and 41.4 inches of legroom. Although rear seat passengers still get a generous 39.0 inches of headroom, legroom is quite compromised, measuring just 30.8 inches. Adults will not want to be relegated to the rear quarters. Even less accommodating is the trunk, with a scant 5.2 cubic feet of space. Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee When it's time to drop the soft top, there's minimal wind buffeting up front even at freeway speeds. I could easily still hear the radio and have louder conversations. The rear seat passengers, on the other hand, will be in a world of wind. Interior Style and Quality: Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee The MINI, even in John Cooper Works form, remains quite similar inside. There is a knit fabric dashboard and a massive 9.4-inch round infotainment system that dominates the center dashboard. Still placed between the front passengers is a storage box, and the switch gear remains largely unchanged. One big difference is the unique steering wheel for JCW, which, of course, includes those paddle shifters. Technology: Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee My John Cooper Works Convertible tester arrived in the Iconic trim, which meant it had features like a head-up display, Harman Kardon sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, WiFi hotspot, navigation, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing automatic wipers, customizable ambient lighting, and more. Value Dollars and Sense: Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee In the USA, pricing for the 2026 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible starts at $45,775 (all prices including destination charges). With the Iconic trim and some other features added on, as tested, the car came in at $50,775. For something that's not the most practical vehicle on the road, that's quite a bit of money. One really needs to buy into the MINI driving experience, fun, and lifestyle to appreciate the car at that price point. In Canada, there're less options as the car comes more loaded right out of the factory. Pricing starts at $62,945, with my tester clocking in at $65,145. Final Thoughts: Image: Mike Schlee Image: Mike Schlee The 2026 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible is one of the best droptops MIN has ever produced, while still retaining that JCW capability. Although it may not be as manic as cars from the past, there's still a boatload of performance on tap, and I'll gladly take the trade-off of a much more livable experience day-to-day. With the price point where it is, this is a niche car, but for the right type of customer, it should provide endless miles of motoring fun.
