2026 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Wagon Review: Power And Unexpected EfficiencyAutoGuide.comCraig ColeWed, September 16, 2026 at 5:58 PM UTCAdd us on Google2026 mercedes amg e 53 wagon review powerand expected efficiencyEfficiency and performance are usually antithetical, but the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid Wagon effortlessly delivers plenty of both in a package that's also highly attractive, surprisingly versatile, and mostly luxurious.Quick TakeThis plug-in hybrid wagon delivers excellent performance along with surprising efficiency. You get up to 604 horsepower for rapid acceleration, but thanks to its 21.2-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, this AMG also provides an estimated 41 miles of all-electric range, plenty for smooth and nearly silent daily driving.2026 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Wagon Review: All The Details2026 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Wagon Review: All The DetailsView GalleryAdvertisementAdvertisement71 photosWagons for EveryoneA refreshing alternative to the trucks and SUVs that dominate North American roads, the station wagon form factor is refreshingly – and disappointingly – uncommon these days. With its large and friendly grille, clean flanks made smoother by retractable exterior door handles, tasteful brightwork accents, and low, long proportions, this high-performance E-Class is far prettier than many pickups and utility vehicles. Optional Patagonia Red Metallic paint ($1,750) and 21-inch forged wheels ($2,600) further zhush up an already handsome design.Fortunately, those good looks don't significantly impact versatility. In the rear, you get 13.1 cubic feet of space, though that grows to 59.2 when the split rear backrest is folded, which you can do at the push of a button from right in the cargo area. Either way, that is less room than in many SUVs these days, though those figures are still impressive for a car this low and sleek.2026 mercedes amg e 53 wagon review powerand expected efficiencyImmense Power, Impressive EfficiencyThe E 53 Hybrid Wagon's styling and versatility may draw you in, but the performance will keep you coming back for more. Motivation is provided by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 augmented by a 161-horsepower electric motor. You also get a 9-speed automatic transmission and even an AMG-tuned AWD system for enhanced traction and handling in all weather conditions.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat under-hood hardware provides a muscular 577 hp, though the Race Start feature, which is included in the $3,150 AMG Dynamic Plus Package, increases the maximum output to a whopping 604 hp. This output is enough to rocket the E 53 Wagon to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds flat, or just 3.8 if you're using Race Start. And believe me, either way this car is plenty quick when you stomp on the accelerator pedal, though it doesn't feel explosively potent. The drivetrain is smooth and the power delivery very linear, refinement that helps disguise the sensation of speed. This Mercedes-Benz can definitely get you in trouble if you're not paying attention.Drastically improving efficiency, the integrated electric motor can power the car all on its own. This dynamo won't set the world ablaze, but the performance is perfectly fine for normal, everyday driving. If you're aggressive with the accelerator pedal or need to pass a slower vehicle, the engine seamlessly engages to provide more thrust.2026 mercedes amg e 53 wagon review powerand expected efficiencyThe other side of the drivetrain coin is this station wagon's impressive electrification. The vehicle is fitted with a surprisingly large 21.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This provides an EPA-estimated 41 miles of all-electric range, very impressive for any plug-in hybrid in the U.S. today, let alone one that offers this much performance.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile not absolutely necessary, to take full advantage of any plug-in hybrid powertrain they have to be plugged in and charged, and this Mercedes-AMG makes it easy. The car AC charges at up to 9.6 kilowatts, which is powerful enough to fully juice up the battery is less than 3 hours. An almost unheard of bonus in a PHEV sold in the U.S., the E 53 wagon can also DC fast charge, which is great for road trips. The car maxes out at 60 kilowatts, enough to take the battery from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. All this electrification does wonders to improve vehicle efficiency. The E 53 wagon delivers an estimated 22 miles per gallon when the gasoline engine is doing its thing, but when you run exclusively off the battery pack, expect a whopping 56 MPGe, that is, miles per gallon equivalent.2026 mercedes amg e 53 wagon review powerand expected efficiencyEngaging to Drive, But Complexity AboundsHelping you control its impressive power, this AMG's ride is definitely firm, but fortunately not vicious. This car's steering feel is also outstanding. The wheel is heavy and substantial in your hands but also extremely sharp, which makes it easy to make tiny course corrections while navigating turns.Since this is a German car, there's a lot of complexity, especially when it comes to the driving modes. There's a dizzying array of options to choose from and settings you can adjust. Honestly, this is all way too much.2026 mercedes amg e 53 wagon review powerand expected efficiencyI've been driving the car in the Comfort mode, which delivers great performance, though the car is still very stiff. The two Sport settings further sharpen the chassis and powertrain but the difference between these and Comfort isn't that big. There's also an Individual setting, one that runs the vehicle exclusively off battery power and even one that preserves electric range, so it can be used later.AdvertisementAdvertisementOne dynamic disadvantage to the E 53 is the brake pedal. It feels so incredibly weird! The brakes are grabby at random times, but the pedal effort is also ridiculously high; you really have to stomp on it for the brakes to bite. I'm not sure if this is supposed to make the car seem sportier, but it really feels like something is wrong.2026 mercedes amg e 53 wagon review powerand expected efficiencyAn Upscale Interior With Some IssuesAs you would expect for a Mercedes-Benz, this plug-in hybrid wagon's interior is luxurious. The materials mostly look and feel great, the E 53 has plenty of technology, and the comfort is good. There is, however, some shiny black trim, which is a magnet for dust and fingerprints plus there are various touch-based controls that feel quite frail, but these missteps don't detract from the experience too much.Dominating the dashboard is a standard 14.4-inch central touchscreen as well as a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. This example also has the optional $990 3D effect, which works surprisingly well, providing real visual pop. This E 53 wagon also has the available $1,500 MBUX Superscreen package. This gets you a giant slab of glass as well as another 12.3-inch display for the passenger to play with. You also get a built-in camera for taking selfies or conference calls. The software running on these screens is a bit hit and miss. The performance of the infotainment system is great, everything responds without any lag or stuttering. The user interface, however, is a bit disorganized, with an odd menu structure and layout. The climate controls, in particular, are unusually designed, with separate menus for airflow, temperature and fan speed.2026 mercedes amg e 53 wagon review powerand expected efficiencyOn the plus side, the E 53 Hybrid Wagon comes standard with an excellent 360-degree camera system that is one of the best I've seen. This setup is super clear and crisp, plus it's very easy to adjust the camera angles to get a great view all around the vehicle.AdvertisementAdvertisementComfort is respectable if not outstanding in this Mercedes-AMG. Our tester has the $3,250 performance front seats. These chairs are heated, offer highly adjustable lumbar support and are firmer than a chiropractor's mattress, but they're probably not worth the asking price. Ventilation is also available for an extra $450, a sum that seems both ridiculous and reasonable at the same time. The backseat in this car has a good amount of room for adult passengers and, again, the cushions are firm. Unfortunately, the sills are also practically as wide as a four-lane highway and consequently can be hard to step over without dragging your pantlegs across them, so beware if the body has any dirt or mud on it.2026 mercedes amg e 53 wagon review powerand expected efficiencyThe VerdictThe 2026 Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid Wagon is, not surprisingly, a pricey piece of German engineering. Including delivery, this versatile vehicle starts around $97,000, though the example tested here checks out for a princely $116,980 including destination fees and a smattering of options. From the weird brake pedal and the unusual climate controls to the glossy black trim and flimsy buttons, this high-performance car is not without its oddities, but the E 53 Hybrid Wagon also looks amazing; it delivers incredible performance, the comfort is good and there's still a decent amount of cargo space. If you have the means and you're not afraid to be a little different, to eschew a pickup truck of SUV, this station wagon does not disappoint.AdvertisementAdvertisementBecome an AutoGuide insider.
