The BMW 3 Series has often been seen as a car that can do it all. The G20 version of the 3 Series was introduced in 2019 and received an LCI (facelift) in 2023 with an upgraded interior. It has also been widely regarded as one of the most complete packages in terms of performance, comfort, and reliability. With this current model, it has become even more apparent than ever that there is a BMW 3 Series model for everybody that can afford one.In 2026, there are seven trim options to choose from when you make a decision about your next perfect sedan. So which one is best for you? We break down all the BMW 3 Series trim levels, from the most practical and comfortable, to the most powerful and adrenaline-spiking models. The specifications were correct at the time of writing. The base MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price), where mentioned, excludes destination fees and other costs. Automakers reserve the right to update pricing at their own discretion and without notice. 2026 BMW 330i Sedan MSRP: $48,000 BME Key Features: 18-inch tires Satin aluminum exterior trim Sport steering wheel Optional M Sport trim with M sport suspension, M steering wheel and aerodynamic kit Optional Driving Assistance Professional package with partially automated driving features The 330i is the base model of the current BMW 3 Series trims, but it is hardly inferior to the rest. Modern BMWs have a habit of overwhelming customers with their extensive optional packages, and those are also on offer here. With the right options ticked, you can convert this into a 'baby' M car for a fraction of the cost, or go the completely opposite way and pick every partial autonomous driving feature to make your drive back from work hassle-free. If you do not decide to pick any optional upgrades, the base 3 Series still has the best fuel economy out of the entire lineup. This is due to its rear-wheel drivetrain, providing good driving dynamics and helping you travel up to 484 miles on a single tank. If you are conscious of your budget, the base 330i is a perfect entry point into the lineup, without feeling like you are missing much from the more expensive offerings. 2026 BMW 330i xDrive Sedan MSRP: $50,000 BME Key Features: 18-inch tires Satin aluminum exterior trim Sport steering wheel Optional M Sport trim with M sport suspension, M steering wheel and aerodynamic kit Optional Driving Assistance Professional package with partially automated driving features As good as the base 330i is, it can always get better. That is exactly what the xDrive variant of the 330i gets you for an additional $2,000. All-wheel drive is a big boost in terms of stability and convenience, especially in slippery or tricky conditions. The all-wheel-drive system does not permanently send power to all four wheels, but rather adapts to the use case. If conditions are optimal, the car remains mostly rear-wheel drive. If any of the front wheels start to lose traction, the powertrain can send power to the front axle. Besides that, there is no real difference between the base model and the xDrive. Another thing to keep in mind, the four-wheel drive system takes a hit on the mpg of the xDrive, making it a little less fuel efficient than its two-wheel-drive counterpart. 2026 BMW M340i Sedan MSRP: $62,300 BMW Key Features: 19-inch tires M Sport brakes, steering, suspension and differential BMW Remote Services with features such as remote door unlock, etc Leather-wrapped steering wheel M rear spoiler The M340i is the next logical rung of the BMW ladder. After the 'Core' models of the 330i, BMW M steps in to upgrade the 3 Series into a performance beast. With sportier body styling and internal enhancements such as M sport brakes and suspension, the M340i is the perfect middle ground between practicality and performance. The upgrade list does not stop there. One of the biggest differences between the 330i and the M340i is the six-cylinder B58 engine. Known for its capabilities and reliability, it is one of the best engines BMW makes at the moment. It is also rear-wheel drive in its base trim, adding to the fun driving dynamics BMW lovers look for. The M340i is $14,300 more than the base 330i, which is a significant step-up for a car that looks very similar from the outside. However, if you are looking for a sporty sedan that can also keep up with your day-to-day life, it does not get better than this. 2026 BMW M340i xDrive Sedan MSRP: $64,300 BMW Key Features: 19-inch tires M Sport brakes, steering, suspension and differential BMW Remote Services with features such as remote door unlock, etc Leather-wrapped steering wheel M rear spoiler Actually, it does get better than the M340i. The M340i xDrive adds the one thing missing from the M performance pupil: all-wheel drive. Just like the 330i, the xDrive is $2,000 more than the rear-wheel drive variant. Apart from that, there is no major difference between the two. You get the same optional packages on both cars, and the same M sport brakes, steering and differential. Fuel efficiency takes a minor hit here as well, as the engine has to send power to two more wheels. 2026 BMW M3 Sedan MSRP: $79,300 BMW Key Features: 18/19-inch tires. Only 3 series with a manual transmission M Sport differential Passive dampers M Drive and M Driving Dynamics Control The M3 is where BMW M gets serious. Sitting at the top of the 3 Series lineup, the M3 is the most performance-orientated 3 Series of them all. Where the M340i was the middle ground and still looked similar to the 330i, the M3 is a complete overhaul in terms of styling. The M3 also gets a boosted in-line six-cylinder engine, now called the S58. The 'base' M3 is also the only manual 3 Series you can currently get on the market, further cementing its place as the enthusiast's first choice. Practicality takes a step back here, but it is still not bad. The M3 still has ample space for the rear passengers, and has 16.9 cubic feet of trunk volume, which is the same as the 330i, as it is based on the same chassis. Nevertheless, if you want the best analog performance-orientated four-door sedan BMW currently offers, you won't be able to do much better than the M3. 2026 BMW M3 Competition Sedan MSRP: $83,500 BMW Key Features: 19/20-inch tires No manual option Adaptive M suspension Fastest rear-wheel drive 3 series currently on sale Stiffer ride setup aimed for track use The 2026 BMW M3 Competition retains the infamous Competition badge for this year as well. The Competition trim makes the M3 even more track-oriented, with only the option of a ZF eight-speed auto gearbox and no manual. Power also increases by 30 horsepower in this trim. The Competition is around $4,000 more than the 'base' M3 as it also adds adaptive M dampers and suspension. This adds the ability to tune suspension stiffness between the various Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus drive modes to aid stability on track, while retaining some comfort on the road. 2026 BMW M3 Competition xDrive Sedan MSRP: $88,600 BMW Key Features: 19/20-inch tires No manual option Most powerful 3 series currently on sale Adaptive M suspension Stiffer ride setup aimed for track use And finally, sitting comfortably at the top of the 3 Series lineup for 2026 is the M3 xDrive Competition. It takes all the good bits of the M3 Comp and adds the last missing piece of the puzzle, all-wheel drive. This makes this M3 the fastest 3 Series currently on sale and simultaneously also the least fuel efficient. But I am sure whoever is considering an M3 is willing to take a hit on fuel economy for 'sheer driving pleasure'.With all the 2026 BMW 3 Series models explained, here is a brief summary to help you decide your ideal trim. Among all the types of BMW 3 Series, if you want the best 3 Series in terms of performance, look no further than one of the M3 models. If you want to enjoy good performance from your sedan but still not go all out on the hardcore M3, the M340i is the best middle ground option. If you like your fuel economy too much and are adhering to a strict budget, the base 330i is still a solid option, with very few compromises to practicality.
