1 000 horsepower and a 6 speed manual meet the ruf b8At the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, RUF just pulled the sheet off an insane, in-house-developed horizontally opposed eight-cylinder engine.Designated the "Boxer 8" (or B8), the massive 4.8-liter twin-turbocharged powerplant breaks from RUF's deep history of high-output flat-sixes. The flat motor delivers an output of over 1,000 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque without even a shred of hybrid assistance. The prototype wears a tri-color graphic layout over a custom Blossom Yellow paint scheme-a homage to the CTR "Yellowbird" that built the brand's legendary status nearly 40 years ago.1 000 horsepower and a 6 speed manual meet the ruf b8The brand-new engine is currently operating in a fully functional development prototype. True to RUF's purity the brute force of the flat-eight is piped through a proprietary six-speed manual gearbox. The flat engine is a true boxer that uses individual crankpins for each piston-ensuring that pairs of opposing pistons mirror each other's movements, cancelling out primary vibrations.AdvertisementAdvertisementBecause an eight-cylinder boxer demands more space than a standard six, RUF engineers had to lengthen the mid-engined chassis of the CTR3 supercar platform it's using as a test mule by exactly 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) to clear the extra pair of cylinders.Porsche captured a string of motorsports victories in the 1960s with flat-eight race cars like the 907, 908, and the Type 753 engines even pushed Porsche's 804 to the brand's one and only Formula 1 victory. But no one-including Porsche- has ever successfully brought a modern boxer-eight to a road-legal production sports car.1,000 Horsepower And a 6-Speed Manual: Meet The RUF B8"There are moments in a company's history that define the future," said Alois Ruf. "For RUF, the Boxer 8 is one of those moments. A boxer-eight has never been part of our story, or anyone else's in this form, so we decided to write a new chapter in automotive history. We look forward to letting the engine speak for itself at Goodwood."Attendees at this weekend's Goodwood festivities will have multiple opportunities to witness the twin-turbo mule in action. The lengthened CTR3 is scheduled to make two dynamic passes per day up the famous Goodwood Hillclimb during the event's "Supercar Run," with professional drift and stunt driver Tanner Foust handling the job.Become an AutoGuide insider.
