A 4-Door Ford Mustang May Be Happening — And That's a Good Thing

The Ford Mustang is an automotive icon. Ford has already committed purported sacrilege by expanding the Mustang into a sub-brand with the Mustang Mach E, an all-electric crossover. Signs point to Ford adding another non-traditional Mustang to the stable: a sedan.

Ford reportedly showed a four-door Mustang sedan to dealers last summer. And this week, Ford filed a trademark application for “Mach 4.” When asked for comment, Ford noted to us that trademark filings “aren’t necessarily an indication of new business or product plans.” However, using some deductive reasoning, Mach is a speed marker that Ford uses for the Mustang. The number 4, in automotive parlance, usually represents four doors or four-wheel-drive.

If Ford takes the plunge and offers a Mustang sedan, it would be a great idea. Here’s why.

Four doors would solve the Mustang’s biggest issue

The Mustang has many virtues. There aren’t many cars out there still offering a V8 with a manual transmission. But comfort and practicality are not among those virtues. The Mustang’s rear bench seat is not the industry’s worst. But it can be particularly hard to access.

I once used my Mustang coupe press car to transport my infant son. Squeezing the car seat into the vehicle to install it was one challenge. I then had to climb into the back seat from the opposite side — not a smooth or delicate process in isolation — while holding my son to get him in and out. Silly journalist! Mustangs aren’t for kids. Well, yes. But a car not working with kids precludes much of the adult population from buying one.

A Mustang sedan would help Ford sell more Mustangs

The Mustang isn’t selling well. Ford moved just over 44,000 of them in 2024. It was the Mustang’s worst sales year ever. And that wasn’t an anomaly. The Mustang’s four worst sales years historically are the last four years. The Mustang isn't even the best-selling Mustang in the lineup. The Mustang Mach E outsold it.

Making the Mustang more practical would give it a broader audience and increase sales. The best example of this may be the Jeep Wrangler. The Wrangler had a traditionalist off-roader fanbase with a heritage dating back more than six decades. For the JL generation in 2007, Jeep introduced the previously unthinkable, the four-door Wrangler Unlimited.

How did it go over? It immediately boosted sales of the Wrangler, which suddenly became a viable family car. The Wrangler Unlimited is seldom distinguished as that anymore because four doors is now the default form of Wrangler, even for enthusiasts buying the highly specialized versions.

Selling More Mustangs Would Help Keep the Two-Door Model Alive

Shelby America

The ultimate goal for Mustang enthusiasts is to keep Ford investing in the classic two-door model. We want the V8 and the manual to stick around. We want more Dark Horses, Shelby GTs, Mach 1s and other special editions. The best way to ensure Ford continues spending R&D on producing better Mustangs is to ensure that Ford sells more Mustangs. The best way to sell more Mustangs is to be less sacrosanct and make the Mustang more accessible.
