Here’s the deal: American families love their SUVs; SUVs love their fuel; American family budgets do not love today’s cost of fuel. But SUVs need to drive families around. Every day, every week, every month. They need to get kids to school in the morning, and to extra-curricular activities in the evening. They are required to haul home DIY materials or garden supplies on the weekends. Or they need to take the family to the slopes in the winter. The cottage or the camping site in the summer. So what to do?Hybrid powertrains are a good start—you still have the familiar ICE, but it has a little help from a motor or two—offering gasoline relief in certain situations, and boosting it in others, with the result of stretching the distance the SUV is able to go between fill-ups. In the past, and to a certain extent the present, saving money at the pumps meant downsizing an engine (which often left a family SUV anemic) or downsizing the vehicle (which left the family cramped), but these hybrid SUVs show you don’t have to give up either to stretch out your fuel usage.Models are listed in ascending order based on the max EPA-estimated fuel range, from the lowest to the highest. 2026 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Driving Range: 598 Miles ToyotaSince its introduction at the dawn of the 21st century, the Toyota Highlander has had the family-SUV formula right, and when it acquired a hybrid powertrain in 2004, it became one of the most sensible family-vehicle options. For 2026, the Highlander Hybrid comes within a whisper of the 600-mile barrier thanks to 35-mpg efficiency from Toyota’s vaunted 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine, and a 17.1-gallon fuel tank. Most competitors manage better numbers from FWD models, but the Highlander Hybrid only comes in AWD.ToyotaThe only other option available for the 2026 Toyota Highlander is a 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder, and it manages about 170 miles less in range, combined, from a nearly extra gallon of gasoline on board. Power to the hybrid is reduced by about five percent and torque quite substantially, resulting in better towing numbers for the non-hybrid, but the big countermove is that the Highlander Hybrid is likely to be a city and suburban vehicle, probably not logging too many highway miles, which would mean a bonus of about 220 miles of range over the turbo Highlander. 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Driving Range: 598 Miles SubaruThe 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid gains some Toyota hybrid know-how to shape its boxer-engine, AWD compact into an efficient model that nearly reaches the 600-mile range peak. The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid adds two electric motors to boost the Crosstrek’s 2.5-liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine. Its horsepower doesn’t quite reach 200, but it manages a combined 36 mpg with on-board fuel capacity of just under 17 gallons. Like Highlander, it achieves that with standard AWD, whereas rivals that do better rely on FWD versions.SubaruThe numbers really shine in the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, eclipsing the non-electrified Crosstrek’s 2.5 Boxer by nearly 120 miles of range, seven more combined mpg, and 10 mpg better in city driving. Its size and intent make it an ideal low-speed driver where the hybrid system draws most on the electric motors; the Crosstrek Hybrid’s efficiency is dead-spot balanced over both city and highway driving. That means that with sensible acceleration and braking, you should consistently reach the top estimated range. 2026 Lincoln Nautilus Hybrid AWD Driving Range: 600 Miles TopSpeed Unlike the previous hybrid SUVs, the 2026 Lincoln Nautilus Hybrid positions itself as a long-range luxury cruiser, prioritizing upscale long-distance comfort and allowing you to enjoy that comfort longer than most of its competitors. It’s rated at 600 miles, based on its combined 30-mpg rating and 20-gallon tank, but if it spends more time on the highway, then its 31-mpg rating will likely add another 20 miles to the next stop. Most luxury SUVs still prefer to prioritize power and performance, making the Nautilus Hybrid a unique car.TopSpeed A relative unknown in the hybrid SUV ranks, the 2026 Lincoln Nautilus Hybrid uses the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as the non-hybrid model. Without the electric assist, the regular Nautilus, rated at 24 mpg combined, will have to stop for fuel 120 miles sooner, though the gap is not as pronounced on the highway, where the Hybrid’s electric motor can help it get to the next station 20 miles down the road. However, the range difference is substantial if the Nautilus Hybrid is primarily used as a long-distance commuter or driving clients to house showings. 2026 Lexus RX 350h AWD Driving Range: 619 Miles LexusIf the luxury hybrid SUV segment had a face, the Lexus RX Hybrid would be it. The 1999 RX was the first luxury crossover, and then the first luxury hybrid crossover in 2005, and has led the segment and championed the efficiency cause among luxury vehicles since. The 2026 Lexus RX 350h continues to prioritize efficiency and long-distance comfort, with 36-mpg combined efficiency and a range that borders on 620 miles. Despite that distance in comfortable long-distance cruising, the RX 350h is skewed to city driving, theoretically enabling it to eke out an extra 20 or so miles.LexusThere are five cornerstones to the 2026 Lexus RX lineup, with a second hybrid (the 500h Sport Line) using Toyota’s turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder Hybrid Max powertrain that helps it achieve, at best, 464 miles, and a plug-in RX 450h+ version with the 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle powertrain returning 540 miles of overall range (plus 38 miles strictly on electricity). The non-electrified RX comes in FWD and AWD, with its best ranges between 425 and 445 miles, depending on configuration. 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid FWD Driving Range: 619 Miles ToyotaPerhaps the biggest benefit of hybrid powertrains is felt in large SUVs, such as larger midsize offerings like the Toyota Grand Highlander. In FWD configuration, the 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid clocks in at 36 mpg combined, enabling it to travel almost 620 miles on 17.2 gallons of regular gasoline. The AWD model isn’t too far off, capable of reaching 585 miles on a full tank. Both use the Toyota 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain and lean into driving at city speeds, making the Grand Highlander Hybrid perhaps the biggest runabout.ToyotaThere are several high-economy Toyota Grand Highlander models for 2026, including a Hybrid MAX version that sacrifices efficiency for the power a family SUV sometimes needs for towing, or to venture farther from paved roads, or simply to not run out of breath as it’s moving more people. Of interest is that the non-electrified FWD Grand Highlander is very good on the highway (better than its hybrid alternative with the same 2.4-liter turbo engine), making it capable of reaching nearly 500 miles on a full 17.9-gallon tank (0.7 gallons larger than the hybrids’ fuel tanks) 2026 Hyundai Palisade Blue Hybrid FWD Driving Range: 619 Miles Nicole Wakelin/TopSpeedThe FWD 2026 Hyundai Palisade Blue Hybrid is a sort of anomaly in the SUV world—a three-row SUV bordering on full-size capable of eking out 34 mpg, using a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and an 18.2-gallon fuel tank to easily surpass 600 miles between fill-ups. And though its fuel usage is evenly balanced, it slightly favors highway driving, meaning it could theoretically get nearly 640 miles if it mostly plays away from city streets. But its powertrain isn’t anemic, pumping out 329 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque.TopSpeed | Michael FrankThe regular Palisade Hybrid (Hyundai tunes Blue to attain maximum efficiency) drops about 60 miles to the tank-full, and the AWD Palisade Hybrid drops nearly 100 miles (there is no AWD Blue Hybrid), but all are substantially better than the non-electrified Palisades, which use a 3.5-liter V-6 to struggle to 400 miles of range, at best, and just 360 miles in the off-roading XRT Pro. The hybrid may actually be the smarter buy all around, with its combined outputs besting the 287 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of the V-6 models. 2026 Toyota RAV4 FWD Driving Range: 624 Miles ToyotaThe FWD 2026 Toyota RAV4 remains one of the most treasured buys in the compact SUV segment, and that will likely intensify now that it’s a hybrid-only model, so buyers are guaranteed the typical RAV4 persona in a more efficient package. Using Toyota’s ubiquitous 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain, the 2026 RAV4 uses three motors and a 14.5-gallon fuel tank to travel nearly 625 miles between fill-ups, averaging 43 mpg combined in FWD configuration and 41 in AWD, granting it a range just shy of 600 miles.ToyotaThere is also a plug-in hybrid version of the 2026 Toyota RAV4, which maintains the overall mpg and fuel tank capacity, meaning it should return the same driving range, under ideal driving conditions, but will then also add upwards of 50 miles of electric-only driving at city speeds, which is where the new RAV4 is most comfortable. The electric-only driving in effect replaces the ultra-efficiency of the front-drive RAV4, since the RAV4 PHEV comes only in AWD mode. 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid Driving Range: ~637 Miles Nicole Wakelin/Top SpeedThere was a time when Toyota hybrids dominated lists such as this, but Hyundai seems to have taken over the mantle with its steadfast hybrid development. Case in point, the large-midsize 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid, which brings dramatically improved efficiency and long-distance capability to an AWD three-row SUV that borders on full-size dimensions. It’s yet to be officially rated by the EPA, but the manufacturer is projecting 637 miles of range, which outdoes all other AWD hybrids and Hyundai’s own version, the Hyundai Palisade Hybrid, in FWD configuration.KiaThe 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid uses the same turbocharged 2.5-liter Atkinson-tuned hybrid powertrain as the Hyundai Palisade, as well as the same 18.2-gallon tank, for its first hybrid powertrain. Though it's evenly balanced for city and highway efficiency, and a welcome solution for families needing three-row accommodations without the fuel-cost penalties, the new Telluride Hybrid is also more powerful than the outgoing 3.5 V-6, as Kia moves to a turbo-four-only lineup for Telluride (losing just 10 horsepower in the non-hybrid, versus the V-6). 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid FWD Driving Range: 637 Miles Isaac Atienza | TopSpeedThe Hyundai Santa Fe debuted in 2001 to challenge the Toyota RAV4, then a half-decade later moved up to challenge the Highlander in the midsize three-row class. Meticulous in its development, the Santa Fe progressed through various stages to become a leader in practicality, versatility, and efficiency, today housing nearly 640 miles of range in its 17.7-gallon fuel tank in FWD configuration (602 in AWD), while maintaining an even keel through city and highway driving, using a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine backed by two motors.Craig Cole | TopSpeedThe turbocharged hybrid powertrain of the 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid provides a whopping 200 miles of extra range over the non-hybrid Santa Fe, with its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. That’s huge! And even on a long-distance road trip, where the 2.5 is at its most comfortable, you’re stopping for fuel some 125 miles farther down the road. But the best part is that the hugely sensible Santa Fe likely spends more time on urban and suburban streets, where the FWD model’s theoretical 655-mile potential outdistances the non-hybrid by 300 miles. 2026 Kia Sorento Hybrid FWD Driving Range: 655 Miles KiaWhen you start to think about the potential of the Santa Fe Hybrid, you then get the reality of its Kia cousin, the 2026 Kia Sorento Hybrid, which, in FWD configuration, is the longest-range hybrid SUV champion. All things being equal between the two, which they basically are, the Sorento Hybrid ekes out an extra mile per gallon, combined, probably through aerodynamic fine-tuning, resulting in 20 miles of extra driving on the same 17.7-gallon tank.KiaLike the Santa Fe, the 2026 Kia Sorento Hybrid goes some 200 miles farther than its non-hybrid counterparts, but unlike the Santa Fe, there is also a turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter four-banger, which loses another 50 miles in FWD configuration (but negligible range in AWD). However, Kia also markets a 2026 Sorento PHEV, which uses Sorento’s 1.6 turbo four hybrid powertrain, but a gas tank that’s five gallons smaller, returning a 410-mile combined driving range, but adding 30 miles of electric-only driving.Sources: OEMs, the EPA, Edmunds
