When it comes to American-made motorcycles, it's impossible to overstate the influence the Harley-Davidson Motor Company has had on the sector. In continual, uninterrupted operation since just after the turn of the 20th century, H-D saw the rise and fall of all domestic competition to establish a monopoly that has only been challenged a few times over the years. This threat has always been from Indian Motorcycle, which is enjoying a decided uptick in fortunes since it was pulled under the broad Polaris umbrella. All that said, most people associate American cruiser and touring bike riders with Harley. Within its lineup over the decades, there are a number of models that are positively steeped in Americana with their own lore and a built-in fanbase. Here are 10 of those models. To give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Harley-Davidson. The list is in no particular order of importance or significance. The information given is current as of the time of this writing. Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Symbol of: cross-country freedom, American luxury touring Mecum Auctions The H-D Electra Glide has long been a symbol of freedom with long legs and comfort-driven designs that gobble up the miles on the vast American interstate system and highways. This is a machine with a proper pedigree and no shortage of celebrity owners up to and including The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Electra Glides have escorted Presidents and have seen police and fire-department service, with special units designated for Shriners as well as the untold millions of owners. As such, it reaches into the very fabric of our society. You could be forgiven for thinking of it as a two-wheeled Cadillac with pilot/ passenger protection from the forward structures, plus secure dry storage out back, and comfortable seating which is frequently heated along with the grips to help extend your riding season. MY22 was the last year H-D produced a model billed as an Electra Glide, though other model variants persevere, such as the Ultra Classic. The Electra Glide represents long-haul freedom on U.S. highways.and is the epitome of the "See America on two wheels" machine as the spiritual sibling of the classic American road trip. Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Performance Specifications Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Symbol of: American muscle and pop culture cool Harley-Davidson The Fat Boy leapt into Americans' hearts when Arnold Schwarzenegger jumped one down into a drain sluice during a chase scene from the 1991 blockbuster movie, Terminator 2. It's a distinctive model typified by its low stance, muscular build, and solid-disc wheels with a fat front end and no fairing, with a caveat. Some later model Fat Boys have small cutouts for a not-quite solid-disc wheel. Much like the terminator from the movie, it's a no-nonsense power-cruiser that is unapologetically bold, with confidence and even a bit of an attitude.Even the frame gets in on the action. It's a second-generation Softail that is more comfortable with better handling than its predecessor, and when paired with the hydraulic front end, it cuts a figure similar to what you might have found in the mid- to late- 1940s due to the faux-rigid rear end. The Fat Boy screams American excess, confidence, and badass attitude, which embodies both Harley's spirit and our national spirit. Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Performance Specifications Harley-Davidson Sportster (Iron 883 & 1200) Symbol of: blue-collar rebellion and individualism Harley-Davidson Nothing splits the H-D community quite like the humble Sportster. It has been largely reviled by the big-bike riders, but absolutely adored by their own rider base, whether they be young, female, beginners, or experienced riders looking for an easy-to-handle, affordable motorcycle with a solid pedigree. This writer happens to fall in that latter category, and I love my Sportsters. This is a working-class bike for working-class riders as it has a relatively low sticker shock new with excellent used prices, making it accessible and a good model for someone's first bike.Plus, they have long been used as a platform for custom projects as they are something of a blank canvas ready for the artist's touch. Like all H-Ds, they come governed with a barely-over 100 MPH top speed that is easier and quicker to reach with a Screamin' Eagle Stage One kit installed. The Sportster design got its start in 1952 with the H-D Model K, and has been in production ever since as an alternative to the usual American fare. The Sportster line embodies America’s DIY spirit and gritty determination, making it a gateway into Harley culture for generations of riders. Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance Specifications Harley-Davidson Road King Symbol of: classic Americana and royal road presence This is a design that started firming up way back in the fifties. With a windshield mounted it was the closest you could get to a modern tour bike with its wide seat and hard bags. It has a foot in each of two worlds. On one hand, it's a wide, heavy frame with a beefy front end like a modern touring machine, but the lack of fairings and the classic headlight nacelle veer back into the cruiser lane. The result is a capable machine that is absolutely steeped in American motorcycle history and is the closest thing to royalty you'll find coming out of Milwaukee. As for looks, it's like something that rode out of the pages of an American history book with the nostalgia of the old trips down Route 66. If the 1950s were depicted in a postcard, it would show a Road King that embodies traditional values and the old-school love for open-road adventure and a simpler way of life. Harley-Davidson Road King Performance Specifications Harley-Davidson Panhead (1948–1965) Symbol of: post-war boom and custom culture birth The Harley-Davidson Panhead engine powered H-D's Big-Twin models from 1948 until it was replaced by the Shovelhead in '66. Technically, there was a short Shovel-Pan era where the engines ran the Shovel-type heads on the Pan-type bottom end with the old generator on board. The alternator-type bottom end, complete with the cone-shaped cam cover, replaced it to make it a full-Shovelhead engine in 1970, but I digress. The Panhead saw production in the heady days after World War II, when returning veterans gravitated toward the machines that they had ridden in theatre, and these formed the first proper motorcycle clubs as we know them now.You could say this is the engine that drove the first organized outlaw bikers and be mostly correct. Its era symbolized post-war American optimism, industrial prowess, and personal freedom. At 74 cubic-inches, this was a large engine for the time in an era of low road and highway speeds with performance that absolutely thrilled the old boys. This engine also saw the dawn of the chopper days with ever more radical builds from the minds of our homegrown bike builders, as well as the commercialization of freedom and a self-determined lifestyle. Harley-Davidson Panhead Performance Specifications Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide Symbol of: raw power and the outlaw lifestyle Mecum Auctions The original Super Glide was a design by none other than Willie G. Davidson and was intended to serve as a showroom-custom machine. It sported custom sheet metal with a very distinct and heavily-bobbed boattail rear fender. As an FX model, it had the engine and frame of the heavy FL models with the narrow front end of the Sportster, which is a feature that it carried until its final form. That form was the Dyna Super Glide, and it saw production through 2014. Laced wheels, a large front hoop, and overly long front forks jacked up the front of the frame to sort of channel that custom chopper vibe. This was a popular model with clubs and independent riders alike, representing the anti-establishment, ride-your-own-way attitude that made Harley infamous. Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide Performance Specifications Harley-Davidson Softail Heritage Classic Symbol of: patriotism and World War II legacy Harley-Davidson The Softail Heritage Classic is one of my all-time favorites. It shares features in common with the bikes used by our servicemen during World War II, namely the fat front forks, windshield, ape-hangers, and rigid rear end. That hard tail is a lie though. On the second-generation Softail frame, it has an articulated rear end and an under-seat shock to deliver a contemporary ride. The old-school goodies extend to the studded saddle, pillion pad, and saddlebags, making this an example of what an antique tour-capable looked like.In short, this thing is positively dripping with nostalgia that splashes onto everything around it. This bike is still in production with a new model for the 2025 model-year and is billed simply as the Heritage Classic. The up-tier engine makes this bike not your grandfather's Heritage with its solid performance figures, but this is still a great design. It blends classic styling with modern comfort and tech, making it a tribute to the American soldier, the Greatest Generation, and the spirit of homegrown pride. Harley-Davidson Softail Heritage Classic Performance Specifications Harley-Davidson LiveWire One Symbol of: American innovation and reinvention Harley-Davidson Gone are the days of mediocre performance with a new demand for strong numbers across the board. H-D looks to curry favor with a new generation of riders with its Livewire spin-off and its Livewire One. As the devilishly-clever name suggests, this is an electric bike, and therein lies the rub. H-D has long set the tone with somewhat antiquated engineering, but this is fresh and new, and is representative of our drive to reinvent.Perhaps best of all, the performance is there. We're talking about a three-second 0-to-60 time with up to a 146-mile range, which should be thrilling for anyone with a pulse with a range long enough to get you there. This bike specifically, and the brand in general, showcases our nation's ingenuity, willingness to evolve, and cutting-edge technological capabilities. Harley-Davidson LiveWire Performance Specifications Harley-Davidson XR750 Symbol of: American racing and daredevil spirit The 2025 model-year marks 55 years of production for the XR750. This is a proper factory race bike folks, built specifically for the American Flat Track circuit. It was the trusted stunt bike of Evel Knievel, and is a beloved model for our storied racing past and present. It used to be that in order to sell bikes, you had to win races, and though the XR750 wasn't exactly what you would call a public model, its racing success paved the way for generations of bikes to come.It wouldn't be until the Wrecking Crew from Indian hit the scene once again that H-D's dominance would slip. Originally it ran Ironhead engines, then later the alloy-heads rolled to deal with an overheating problem, and now it rocks the high-performing Revolution Max engine. As America's winningest race bike, the XR750 is raw, stripped down, and bred forglory and guts. It captures the thrill-seeking, showboating, risk-taking edge of American entertainment and competition. Harley-Davidson XR750 Performance Specifications Harley-Davidson Knucklehead (1936–1947) Symbol of: American legacy and mechanical art The Knucklehead was one of the engines that really got things going for H-D. It was the first overhead-valve arrangement for Milwaukee, which had mostly been all about the Flatheads up until the 1936-1947 reign of King Knuck. It was the cast-aluminum rocker boxes on the right side that gave the engine its name, which was a dramatic change in design and appearance and set the stage for the iconic look of Harley V-twin engines as we know them. It was here that we first saw the engine as part of the curb appeal of the bike, with gorgeous lines and a tall aspect. It also ran a single camshaft for all four poppets, another switch from the Flatty's four single-lobe cams. That's a design decision that would shape the Big Twin engines until the Twin Cams hit the scene in '98. The frame geometry of the bikes it would power would go on to be emulated by the Softail family of frames that came much later, so you can see this is a consequential engine with DNA in even the most modern H-D bikes. Its pre-war roots and enduring legacy represent the early days of American motorcycle culture and is a symbol of craftsmanship and a national identity.
