VW Replacing the ID.4 EV With an Electric TiguanVWOne year ago, Volkswagen let it be known that its numbered ID.X naming scheme was going away. As new generations arrived, the German carmaker would replace names like ID.4 with variations on familiar badges that fans have known for years. What we didn't know at the time was exactly which of those names would wind up being used, and when. As of Monday, we know a little more: the ID.4 and ID.5's successor is officially the ID.Tiguan.The automaker announced the shift ahead of the electric SUV's full unveiling in October. Sales in Europe will begin in early 2027, and North American sales will follow, but VW hasn't said when exactly. (That seems somewhat consistent with the brand's very cautious steps with electric products in the U.S.) The ID.Tiguan will replace both the ID.4 and ID.5 globally, but it won't replace the regular Tiguan; instead, the electric and internal combustion-powered SUVs will live alongside one another.VWThere's some obvious logic behind this shift. Volkswagen says it's produced more than 8.3 million Tiguans; in fact, it's currently the best-selling model across the entire VW Group. Combined deliveries of the Tiguan and Tayron exceeded one million units in 2025. By comparison, the ID.4 and ID.5 have combined to move just 950,000 since 2021. So rather than continue to explain to customers what the ID.4 and ID.5 are, VW salespeople can now simply say, "This is the electric Tiguan."VWThe timing is particularly interesting in the United States. Volkswagen ended ID.4 production at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory earlier this year, leaving existing inventory to bridge the gap until its replacement arrives. According to Electrek, dealers are currently offering hefty incentives on remaining ID.4 inventory, including reports of as much as $12,500 off leftover 2025 models. The camouflaged prototypes show a considerably more upright and conventional SUV design than the soft-edged ID.4, along with split lighting elements. (Volkswagen claims the new design gives it the visual presence of a vehicle from the segment above.) Range, battery capacity, output, charging speeds, and North American pricing remain under wraps. Those answers shouldn't be far away, though, because the full reveal is coming in early October. If You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
