CEO Oliver Blume said after Volkswagen’s first-quarter results on Thursday that the company could build next-generation China-only models in Europe if it finds products suitable for local buyers. “This year, we are ramping up the CMP platform, which is planned for 2027 in China. This work has to be done first, and then we can consider options in Europe and check which products are the right ones,” said Blume. Compact Main Platform (CMP) is a new platform co-developed with Xpeng for new Volkswagen vehicles in China. Blume said that Volkswagen Group’s Western operations could benefit from “(Chinese) innovation, speed and practices”. He called the Chinese ecosystem “a blueprint in terms of architecture, as reported by Autocar. The comments follow Volkswagen’s presentation of several China-focused EVs at Auto China 2026, including the ID. Unyx 09, ID. Aura T6, Jetta X and AUDI E7X. Unyx 08 is the first mass-produced model from the VW-Xpeng collaboration and was launched in China on April 16. It sits on the CMA (Compact Main Platform) and features CEA (China Electronic Architecture), co-developed with Xpeng. The new EV is manufactured by Volkswagen Anhui, VW’s only majority-owned joint venture in China. Volkswagen holds a 75% stake in the company, while JAC owns the remaining 25%. The five-seat all-electric SUV starts at 229,900 yuan (33,300 USD) and is built on an 800V platform with CATL LFP battery options of 82 kWh and 95 kWh. It measures 5,000 mm in length, with a 3,030 mm wheelbase, and offers up to 730 km of CLTC range. The top dual-motor AWD version produces 370 kW, accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, and supports 315 kW fast charging, adding 150 km of range in five minutes. Unyx is actually a series of cars made by VW Anhui, with more on the way. We will mention just briefly, not to make it too overwhelming. ID. Unyx 07 mid-size sedan, slightly larger than the Model 3 and similar in size to the Xpeng Mona M03. It will also feature Xpeng-VW’s CEA and CMA. It reportedly started production in January, but not been much news about the car since then. The ID. Unyx 09 is a large flagship sedan over 5 meters long, unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show last month. Like all ID. The Unyx series will feature Xpeng ADAS and other tech and sit on CEA. It was developed in 24 months. Not many other details have been shared yet, and CarNewsChina expects it to launch by the end of the year. VW ID. Unyx 09 flagship sedan. VW ID. Unyx 07 mid-size sedan. Interestingly, VW-Anhui recently announced it will sell its vehicles in some stores of its other joint venture, FAW-VW. That would be the first time VW China’s joint ventures have cooperated rather than competed with each other. VW ID. Era 9X massive SUV ID. Era 9X is a massive EREV SUV developed and produced by SAIC-Volkswagen. It launched in China on April 27, priced from 309,800 to 359,800 yuan (45,300 to 52,630 USD). The six-seat SUV measures 5,207 mm long and uses a 1.5-litre range extender, dual-motor AWD with up to 380 kW, and battery options of 51.1 kWh and 65.2 kWh. Its CLTC electric-only range reaches 406 km, while the total mixed range is up to 1,651 km. The model also offers 800V charging, air suspension, rear-wheel steering, Lidar-based assisted driving from Momenta, and a 2+2+2 cabin layout. Aura T6 is built by the FAW-VW joint venture, co-developed with Xpeng on the CMP platform featuring the CEA 800V architecture. ID. Aura T6 is an all-electric mid-size SUV with five seats. Not many other details were shared, and we expect deliveries to start early next year. Aura, Xpeng tech Moreover, Volkswagen says it will launch the next-generation CEA 2.0 in 2027, integrating assisted driving and cockpit control into a unified system across all powertrain types. That was the Volkswagen brand. Looking at Volkswagen Group, there are two more significant events: AUDI and Jetta. AUDI is a China-only brand under Audi that ditched the four-rings logo. Jetta is not a mid-size sedan like in Europe, but a whole new China-only entry-level brand. Volkswagen Jetta X Concept – budget electric SUV The Jetta X is a China-only electric SUV concept from Volkswagen’s entry-level Jetta brand, operated by FAW-Volkswagen. It was revealed on April 22 ahead of the Beijing Auto Show. The X previews Jetta’s move from low-cost ICE cars into China’s entry-level NEV market, with the brand targeting the 100,000 yuan price band, or about 14,700 USD. Jetta plans to launch four NEV models by 2028, with the first production model set to debut in China this year. VW Jetta X concept SUV. AUDI E7X large SUV The AUDI E7X is the second model from Audi’s China-only AUDI brand, developed with SAIC, and its first SUV. Unveiled at Auto China 2026, the large all-electric SUV measures 5,049 mm long with a 3,060 mm wheelbase and is built on the Advanced Digitized Platform with a 900V architecture. It will be offered in 300 kW RWD and 500 kW quattro AWD versions, with 100 kWh and 109 kWh CATL battery options. The larger battery offers up to 751 km CLTC range, while the AWD version accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.97 seconds. The E7X is scheduled to launch in China in the second quarter of 2026. AUDI E7X SUV. China-developed models in Europe Blume also said Volkswagen is open to sharing European factory capacity with Chinese automakers. He described co-production as a possible way to reduce unused capacity and lower costs. Volkswagen is targeting a global production capacity of about 9 million vehicles, down from around 12 million before the pandemic. Volkswagen reported a 14% drop in first-quarter operating profit to 2.5 billion euros on April 30. The group is under pressure from weak demand in China and the US, and rising competition from Chinese automakers in Europe.
