BYD’s local subsidiary has confirmed plans to introduce its megawatt flash charging tech into the Malaysian market, according to Malaysian media outlet Paul Tan. The deployment is currently in the research and planning phase, with Malaysia expected to become the first market in Southeast Asia to host megawatt-level ultra-fast charging infrastructure. Jacob Ma, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, said the first batch of megawatt flash charging stations will be prioritised at selected BYD and Denza showrooms as well as after-sales service centres. The team is currently working on charging tariff structures, payment systems, mobile app integration, and user experience design to prepare for commercial rollout. BYD’s megawatt flash charging station in China As deployment progresses and supporting infrastructure matures, the charging network is expected to expand further into additional public locations. BYD is also in discussions with local authorities, regulators, charging operators, and third-party partners to facilitate implementation. The system to be deployed is BYD’s second-generation megawatt flash charging platform, launched in March this year. When paired with a battery energy storage system (BESS), each charging gun can reach a peak output of up to 1,500 kW. Under normal ambient conditions, compatible vehicles can gain approximately 400 km of range in five minutes. Charging from 10% to 70% takes around five minutes, while a 10% to 97% charge requires roughly nine minutes. BYD’s megawatt flash charging time Ma also noted that, subject to hardware protocol compatibility, megawatt charging stations will eventually be opened to non-BYD vehicles. However, the system is currently designed specifically for BYD’s Super e-Platform architecture, and only a limited number of models are capable of supporting megawatt-level charging. BYD has not yet disclosed the exact locations, pricing structure, or commercial launch timeline for the first Malaysian stations, with further details to be released later. In parallel, BYD is accelerating its global charging infrastructure rollout. BYD’s megawatt flash charging station in Germany In May, the company’s first megawatt flash charging station in Germany entered operation, marking its initial deployment in Europe. In June, BYD posted recruitment listings in Toronto, Canada, for its flash charging business, signalling preparations for entry into the local market. According to its global roadmap, BYD plans to build 6,000 flash charging stations overseas by the end of 2026.
