The 2026 GR Corolla reached 60 mph in 4.2 seconds during testing. New intake and chassis upgrades make Toyota’s hatch more composed. Driveline temperature warnings show the GR Corolla still has one weak spot. Toyota’s GR Corolla was already an easy car to like. It had 300 hp (224 kW), all-wheel drive, a six-speed manual, and the slightly unhinged character of a three-cylinder rally car wearing a Corolla body. Now, Toyota has tightened up the formula without sanding off the weirdness that made it special in the first place. Car and Driver recently ran a 2026 GR Corolla Premium Plus manual and came away convinced the updates amount to more than brochure filler. The magazine also had praise for the revised clutch, calling its engagement “spot-on” and better suited to soaking up repeated hard launches without going soft. Nail the launch at 4,500 rpm and the hatch hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds before clearing the quarter-mile in 12.8 seconds at 108 mph (174 km/h). That makes it the quickest manual GR Corolla the magazine has tested yet, trimming 0.7 seconds off the previous model year’s 4.9-second run to 60. The gap holds higher up the range too, with the updated 2026 car reaching 100 mph (160 km/h) in 10.7 seconds against the older model’s 11.4 seconds. The Only Three-Pedal AWD Hatch Left That matters because the Toyota occupies a unique space. The Volkswagen Golf R remains an all-wheel-drive hot hatch, and it is quicker still, but its manual transmission disappeared with the latest update. The GR Corolla is now the only AWD hot hatch Americans can buy with three pedals. It can also send 70 percent of its power to the rear tires, which the Golf can’t come close to. Stiffer, Stickier, Smarter For 2026, it added 45.6 feet (13.9 meters) of structural adhesive to the body, along with revised suspension hardware. Car and Driver says the rear springs are 20 percent firmer while the rear anti-roll bar is 16 percent softer. Rebound springs also help keep the tires planted under hard braking and over rough pavement. It sounds like a strange recipe, but the goal is to provide more stability without turning the thing into a miserable little track special. That’s what the GRMN is for. Toyota also fitted a secondary air intake that reportedly reduces inlet temperatures by an average of 85 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius) under load. The publication found the updated car reached 140 mph (225 km/h) 2.5 seconds sooner than before, which suggests the cooling work is doing something useful. Still, the GR Corolla is not invincible. After six hard acceleration runs, the test car displayed an overheat warning related to the driveline. Owners complain about this sort of thing regularly. The engine may be breathing easier, but Toyota has apparently not cured every thermal gremlin. Hey, at least the brakes remain excellent. The GR Corolla stopped from 70 mph in 154 feet (47 meters) at its best, and its longest stop over six consecutive runs came in just two feet longer. That consistency is what makes this car so special. The Premium Plus manual starts at $46,565 before destination, which is not cheap for a Corolla. But this is not really a Corolla in the ordinary sense. It is a manually shifted, all-wheel-drive, 300-hp oddball that fills the space left by the Subaru WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
