2023 Toyota FT-Se concept The next-generation Toyota MR2 appears to be moving yet closer to reality, as the Japanese manufacturer has filed trademark applications in its native Japan, as well as overseas. According to Japanese news outlet Best Car Web, Toyota has filed a trademark application for “GR MR2”, while Japanese site Creative Trend has additionally found “GR MR-S” among the names filed in the trademark application, the latter listed on the Australian government website for trade mark filings; both Japanese sites suggest that the mid-engined sports car could debut in 2028. Previously, it was reported that Toyota has been developing a rear-mid-engined sports car model codenamed 710D, which will feature the manufacturer’s new G20E 2.0 litre inline-four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine. The report by Best Car Web in July conveyed that the upcoming mid-engined sports car will employ a double rear deck design where there will be individual lids for the engine bay and the rear luggage compartment, like that of its predecessors. In terms of exterior dimensions, the GR MR2 is claimed to be approximately 4,400 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,230 mm tall, making it slightly longer, wider and lower than the last Celica, Best Car Web wrote. The upcoming mid-engined sports car was also said to feature a roof and front and rear luggage compartment lids made of carbon-fibre, such as those found on the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. The manufacturer unveiled the GR Yaris M Concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January this year, which serves as the development mule for the upcoming sports car. This engine will reportedly output 500 PS and 550 Nm in the upcoming mid-engined MR2 successor, which will feature all-wheel-drive. Where this engine is of a 2.0 litre capacity in the upcoming sports car, it is also part of a next-generation line of internal combustion engines that includes a 1.5 litre unit that will serve in hybrid and plug-in hybrid applications. A return of Toyota’s mid-engined sports car has been rumoured since 2018, while Toyota more recently hinted at a return of the Celica and MR2 nameplates as well as the continuation of Supra and GR86 lines.
