The Proton eMas 7 continues its run as the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia, with the model again topping the category for September 2025. Based on the latest data from the road transport department (JPJ), 757 units of the eMas 7 were registered last month, a slight dip from the 766 units sold in August. In terms of year-to-date (YTD) numbers, it stands well clear of the pack, with 6.212 units sold in the first nine months of the year.

Moving up one spot into second place last month was the Tesla Model Y, with its 389 unit (2,434 units YTD) tally for the month placing it ahead of the BYD Atto 3, which with 302 units (2,665 units YTD) sold climbed up a position from its fourth placing in August.

In fourth place was the Tesla Model 3, with the 296 units (1,412 units YTD) recorded giving it a three position jump from the previous month. September was also the best performing month for the model since Feburary. Fifth spot for September was secured by the BYD Atto 2, with 285 units (751 units YTD).

The model is a new entry in the charts, and while it’s not placed in the overall top 20 yet, expect to see it enter that one by next month.

Sitting in eighth was the BYD M6, with 85 units sold (1,261 units YTD), and in ninth was the Xpeng X9, with its 74 units sold last month (452 units YTD) putting it ahead of its brand sibling, the Xpeng G6, of which 63 units (527 units YTD) were sold last month. Sharing sales honours with it for September was the Denza D9, which also sold 63 units (850 units YTD).

In 12th was the BYD Seal, with 61 units sold (886 units YTD), with the next two positions shared by the Chery Omoda E5 (60 units, 554 units YTD) and Zeekr 009 (60 units, 627 units YTD). The recently-launched BYD Seal 6 EV was another new entry in the chart, with 58 units sold. It’s likely to make an appearance in the overall chart before the year is out.

From here until 20th in the monthly list, it’s the Leapmotor C10 (53 units, 278 units YTD) and the Porsche Macan (47 units, not in overall top 20 chart), followed by the iCaur 03, another new entry with 34 units sold last month.

Rounding off the list is the Honda e:N1, with the 33 units sold last month bringing the overall tally to 77 units, based on July and August sales numbers, and the Porsche Taycan (31 units, 306 units YTD). With import and excise duty exemptions for CBU EVs set to end on December 31, expect a swell of registrations to bump up the figures of many models in the run-out period.
