The Silverado and Sierra Finally Get Wider, Redesigned SeatsAutoblogRex SanchezMon, September 21, 2026 at 12:32 PM UTCAdd us on GoogleAutoblog and Yahoo may earn commission from links in this article. The Long-Haul UpgradeOne concern among buyers is that pickup trucks tend to be less comfortable than passenger cars. That may be true to some extent, given their underpinnings, but trucks have come a long way since they were seen primarily as workhorses. For the 2027 model year, General Motors is aiming to take comfort up a notch in the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra by redesigning the seats.Ben Kelly, GM full-size truck program engineering manager, told GM Authority the seat changes go beyond simply swapping the foam. The seats are now wider, and the contours have been developed in three different shapes, each targeting specific customer preferences.ChevroletMaking Space for ComfortThe new seats are said to be 26 mm wider, including both the cushion and underlying seat frame. Just over an inch may not sound like a lot, but the wider structure moves occupants farther from the metal frame rather than simply adding extra padding.AdvertisementAdvertisementMeanwhile, the three different contours include a base-level contour, a lux-level contour, and a sport-level contour. The report did not elaborate on each one, but their names provide a general idea. The base-level contour should be aimed at more affordable trims like the WT. For performance-oriented trims, the sport-level contour should be the go-to to keep drivers more firmly in place, especially when tackling unpaved roads. The lux-level contour is expected to use more premium cushioning to enhance comfort. These seats will be installed in redesigned cabins that have become much more modern, with triple-screen dashboard setups available on high-end trims. The Silverado, for example, gets a 16.3-inch center touchscreen and a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster, with an additional 11.5-inch passenger screen on the ZR2 and High Country.GMCRaising the BarHow much these changes will improve the cabin experience remains to be seen. The new trucks are expected to arrive later this year, giving buyers an opportunity to judge whether the redesigned seats deliver on GM's comfort claims. The trucks are also confirmed to offer new powertrains, including Gen 6 small-block V8 engines: the 5.7-liter L76 and 6.6-liter L78. These replace the 5.3-liter L84 and 6.2-liter L87, respectively. The 2.7-liter TurboMax inline-four has also been upgraded, while the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel remains available.ChevroletView the 3 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementThis story was originally published by Autoblog on Sep 21, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
