TeslaNearly nine years after Tesla first unveiled its electric Semi truck, the long-delayed big rig is finally rolling out to customers.Tesla announced during a Thursday, September 24, event at its new Semi factory in Sparks, Nevada, that deliveries of its high-profile volume production model are beginning, Reuters reported. The milestone comes several years later than originally planned, as the automaker first unveiled the Semi in November 2017 with production expected to begin in 2019.While Tesla did make limited deliveries to customers, including PepsiCo, beginning in late 2022, the company has spent years working toward volume production. The automaker now plans to eventually produce 50,000 Semis annually at its Nevada factory, though it didn't reveal current production numbers or pricing during the event.TeslaTesla is offering two versions of the Class 8 truck. The standard-range model has an estimated 325-mile, and the long-range version can travel up to 500 miles on a charge. Tesla said that figure applies with a fully loaded trailer at an 82,000-lb gross combination weight."That's 500 real-world miles. Our customers have validated it," Tesla Semi engineering director Dan Priestley said at the rollout event, per Reuters.Tesla's website said that both versions can recover up to 60 percent of their range in 30 minutes using the company's Megacharger.TeslaCEO Elon Musk didn't attend the event in person, but he appeared in a prerecorded message, and he promised self-driving features would be added to the Semi "in the very near future."He also touted the truck's performance and lower operating costs compared with diesel-powered trucks before turning his attention to demand."I'd recommend placing more orders if you haven't already, but the waiting list is already pretty significant," Musk said.Read More From First For AutosBilly Joel's Beloved Vintage Motorcycle Collection Is Headed to Auction in NovemberPresident Trump Approves New Fuel Economy Rules That Could Make Cars Cheaper But Gas Bills HigherGeneral Motors Balked After Man's Brand-New $59K Chevy Silverado Needed New Engine After 1,240 MilesThis story Tesla Semi Finally Hits the Road Nearly a Decade After Its Initial 2017 Unveiling first appeared on First For Autos.
