Jump LinksComparing Crosstrek Hybrid vs. RivalsCrosstrek Sport HybridCrosstrek Limited HybridWhen you buy a Subaru, you get off-road prowess, a durable interior, and a boxer engine that's more reliable than almost every other powertrain on the market. With its latest hybrids, though, you can add efficiency to that list. All-wheel drive usually eats up your fuel, but the wizards at Subaru have been able to squeeze out a range from the Crosstrek Hybrid that's not just impressive for the segment, but cars in general. The current Crosstrek Hybrid is a great deal for those who want a crossover on the trail and don't want to think about where the nearest gas station is. You can buy this Japanese SUV for less than you might expect - and it may even save you money in the long term. But what does it have over its rivals in this super-competitive small SUV market? All information is sourced from the manufacturer or test drive experience, where available. All prices listed are MSRP, which does not include any additional fees, offers, or incentives, and is correct at the time of writing. What Is The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid? SubaruThe Crosstrek Hybrid is the smallest and most affordable electrified Subaru in the current lineup, with the most basic model starting at $33,995. Subaru was generally reluctant to offer hybrids, but the Crosstrek seemed to always be an exception to that rule, with the last two generations offering hybrid power. With this version, the company is using a conventional hybrid system to help increase performance but mainly fuel efficiency. You'll be hard-pressed to find the differences between this model and the gas version, but those who want to hide their eco-conscious virtues will enjoy that. As you'd expect, it sits higher with more plastic trim than many of its rivals with Subaru's symmetrical AWD on board. It may be a clean hybrid, but it loves to get dirty. Subaru Crosstrek MPG And Performance 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Exterior 6Great things come in small sizes, and the Crosstrek is no different. The 194 horsepower that comes from this hybrid system might not blow you away (especially as it's paired with a CVT), but Crosstrek hybrid mpg is big on efficiency, with 36 mpg across the board - city/highway/combined. Subaru claims that it's 38% more efficient in the city compared with the gas-only model, and the hybrid also means you get a huge 597 miles on a single tank. That's impressive for a car of this size."The handoff between gas and electric thrust is seamless, and there's more than enough power both off the line and on the trot to get moving down the road in a hurry. The hybrid's added sound deadening means a quiet ride, matching the Crosstrek's already relaxed on-road demeanor just fine."- Brett T. Evans, Senior Road Tester, CarBuzzThis is even more impressive when Subaru is clearly still making off-roading a priority. AWD is standard here, and it works in a more "traditional" way (there is a physical link between the front and rear wheels) compared to Toyota or Honda SUVs, meaning on-road manners in tricky weather are more confidence-inspiring. Our road tester even said this was one of the most comfortable cars he'd driven in 2025 thanks to the bigger suspension travel. Subaru Crosstrek MPG also makes you more comfortable by letting you enjoy the range for longer. Comparing Crosstrek Hybrid vs. Rivals 2021 Mazda CX-30Its two closest rivals, the Toyota Corolla Cross and the Mazda CX-30, go about their business very differently than the Subaru. The Toyota offered the most tepid driving experience but the most efficiency, while the Mazda is said to be the sportiest of the trio but has no hybrid option. In its most efficient form, the Toyota ekes out 42 combined mpg, while the Mazda only manages 27 mpg. The Subaru hybrid mpg sits in the middle with the most off-road chops, so it's all down to what you prioritize in your small SUV. The Two-Model Lineup: Crosstrek Trim Breakdown Crosstrek Sport Hybrid SubaruOut of the two trims, it's the Sport that's cheaper. Even though it's more affordable, it still sits in the middle of both the gas and hybrid variants, so you get a lot of standard features. They include 18-inch wheels, a power moonroof, and the extra choice of two hybrid-specific colors: Sand Dune Pearl and Citron Yellow Pearl. Amenities also include keyless entry, cruise control, and a power driver's seat. The Sport is also great thanks to the all-weather package, which includes heated front seats, a windshield wiper de-icer, and heated side mirrors. That's especially good in colder climates. Compared to a similarly priced Toyota Corolla Cross, there are some features lacking, though, like wireless charging and a heated steering wheel, although you do miss out on a standard moonroof with the Toyota. Crosstrek Limited Hybrid SubaruStepping up to the higher trim, you get a lot more bang for the buck. It's only $1,000 more, but for that you get a much-improved sound system, heated steering wheel, and Subaru's own durable upholstery that's great if you have dogs or messy kids. For just $1k, we'd probably recommend getting this trim as it'll have a lot more resale value when you come to sell the car.One thing we feel like is a missed opportunity is the lack of a hybrid powertrain with the Wilderness trim, which adds more towing capacity, underbody protection, and dual-function X-MODE that can help keep you going on an adventure. The extra power would work well with the higher ground clearance and all-terrain tires to conserve fuel mileage while tackling rough stuff. Crosstrek Hybrid Pricing: How Does It Stack Up Against The Gas Version? SubaruBoth hybrid models of the Subaru Crosstrek are the most expensive of the lineup, but they're also the most efficient and best equipped. The gas-only models can only achieve around 30 mpg combined, so the extra six miles per gallon of the hybrid will add up quickly and contribute to making up the cost of the extra powertrain. The EPA gives the non-hybrid versions a range of only 481 miles and an average fuel cost that's $450 more expensive each year, too.Compared to rivals, the Crosstrek is competitively priced, if slightly on the more expensive side. There aren't many hybrid models in this segment apart from the Toyota Corolla Cross though, so the Subaru also has an advantage there. If you're looking for the ultimate efficiency, the Toyota is your best bet. It gets a huge 46 mpg in the city and starts at less than $30k, so it's cheaper to run overall. What it doesn't have, though, is off-roading prowess or some of the standard features you find on the Subaru.2026 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid mpg is best enjoyed with lower financing, and the company is currently offering pretty aggressive deals to lease or finance this model. It's available at only 1.9% APR or from $339 on a lease deal. The latter is one of the best ways to experience Subaru Crosstrek hybrid MPG as it takes some of the responsibility away when choosing your next small SUV. Is The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Worth Buying? SubaruWe're fans of a hybrid powertrain here at CB, and the Subaru is a great example. There's virtually no trade-off if you can sink the slight extra cost, and it'll save you money in the long term with better fuel efficiency and a higher range. We'd even love to see an even cheaper stripped-out model to compete with the cheapest Corolla Cross or even combine the fun of the Wilderness with the capability of the electrified powertrain.Unlike plug-in hybrids, you won't be able to feel the hybrid powertrain here, so that's a big plus for those who don't want the added inconvenience of charging or messing around with an electric-only range. We'd definitely stomach the extra cost for the added flexibility and power of this powertrain, but be sure to test drive both to see which is best for you. Subaru only makes two hybrid models - but we hope there's more on the way if they're as good as this.
