Maserati is barely moving product at the moment, with its numbers falling from just over 51,000 in 2017 to fewer than 8,000 last year. It's in danger of the one model that is still selling getting stale, so rather than let it happen, Maserati is doing something. The CarBuzz spies recently captured facelifted versions of both the gas Grecale and the Grecale Folgore EV, with Maserati working to hard keep up with Porsche. Just A Little Nip And Tuck CarBuzz/Valnet If you asked us what the problems were with Maserati's crossover, we never would have guessed it was styling. The Grecale, like all Maserati models, is a stunner. That's what has kept the company alive for so long, the promise of a vehicle that lives up to the wrapper. But the styling is what Maserati is most obviously changing. Not the whole thing, though, just the front bumper. That includes the main grille, which gets a new shape. It also includes the lower air inlets, which will also be made more triangular and longer than on the current model.CarBuzz/Valnet Maserati is not changing the one part of the nose we might have thought needed a refresh. The headlights are a little on the awkward side compared with the rest of the design, but these prototypes are wearing the same ones. The CarBuzz spies got a look at the interior as well. It's completely uncovered, showing that there aren't any immediately noticeable changes inside. There could be some software changes, and maybe some new materials, but nothing big.Maserati sells the Grecale with two gas engines and as a dual-motor electric. The gas versions both use a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, but one makes 385 horsepower and the Trofeo makes 523. The strangely-named Folgore EV makes 542 hp from its motors. Just like the cabin, we're hearing that these won't change with the facelift. Not that they need it, but more power (or range) is always nice. Will A Facelifted Grecale Move The Sales Charts? CarBuzz/Valnet This is the second recent sign that Maserati isn't dead yet. Just last week, the head of design at Stellantis said that there would be a new concept car arriving later this year. That concept, expected in October at the Paris show, will launch a new design era for Maserati. That new design, though, probably isn't what's hiding under the face mask of these Grecales. Design head Gilles Vidal said that the new car will be a massive shift, the kind that Maserati took between the 1960s curves and 1970s wedges. Will this mildly worked-over Grecale be enough to bridge the gap until models based on that new styling arrive? It will have to be. But if there's one thing Maserati is good at, it's surviving as a brand.Through a revolving door of owners, Maserati has persisted. There are rumors that Stellantis may be looking to sell it again, though the automaker has been quick to shut down the gossip every time. We're sure that if Stellantis decides to pass it on, somebody would pick up where the company left off.Maserati Grecale Folgore FL 10
