Rivian's R2 configurator is online, and buyers can start dreaming about their next electric SUV that could transport the company's future, if sales are convincing.Starting June 9, Rivian began sending order invitations to customers across the United States while simultaneously launching demo drives and delivering the first R2 models to buyers. The move marks a major milestone for the California-based automaker, which is counting on the smaller and more affordable R2 to reach a far broader audience than its flagship R1T pickup and R1S SUV.For now, customers can only order the range-topping R2 Performance with Launch Package. The first production version comes standard with Rivian's Autonomy+ driver-assistance system and is expected to be the quickest and most capable variant in the lineup. Rivian says additional R2 Premium configurations will arrive later in 2026, while the more affordable Standard trim won't become available until 2027.Rivian MediaThe automaker sent invitations in batches to potential customers, determined primarily by reservation date and delivery location. As expected, current Rivian owners might get fast-tracked and receive earlier access. Another chance for someone to move up the queue is if a customer's lease ends soon and can provide information about that. Last but not least, Rivian also includes a small number of randomly selected reservation holders.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe launch follows another major milestone for the automaker. Earlier this year, Rivian began R2 production despite a tornado striking near its Illinois manufacturing facility, underscoring just how important the midsize SUV is to the company's future.Once an order is confirmed, Rivian says customers can expect delivery within two to six weeks, depending on location and configuration availability.Rivian MediaThe R2 is widely viewed as Rivian's most important vehicle to date. Built on a new midsize platform, the SUV is designed to bring Rivian's adventure-focused brand to a larger market segment currently dominated by vehicles such as the Tesla Model Y. The lineup is expected to expand over time, with future variants offering lower price points and different powertrain configurations. While today's launch focuses on the high-spec Performance model, Rivian's long-term success may depend on the trims that follow. For many buyers, the real sweet spot could arrive later this year with the Premium version, while the entry-level R2 will join the lineup in 2027.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe timing is notable, as many families are also shopping for vehicles ahead of summer road trips and the next school year. Safety remains a top concern for many buyers, especially those looking for the safest cars for teen drivers, a category that continues to influence purchasing decisions across the U.S. market.Rivian MediaFor Rivian, however, the immediate goal is clear: get the R2 into customers' hands. After years of anticipation, reservation holders can finally begin configuring the electric SUV that the company hopes will take it from niche EV maker to mainstream automotive player. This story was originally published by Men's Journal on Jun 9, 2026, where it first appeared in the Gear section.
