With the end of the line for the 718 and its GT4 racing variants, Porsche has the opportunity to do something amazing. And we believe the CarBuzz spies have just spotted it. No, Porsche is not going to replace the GT4 with an electric car. But there appears to be a successor, and it's something that could be good. Very good. Porsche's Newest Race Car Is Another 911 CarBuzz/Valnet Our new photos show a Porsche 911 with Manthey Racing decals and some parts we haven't seen before. Yes, it's a full race car, with a roll cage, motorsports hood pins and tow straps, and more. But it's also not any 911 race car we've seen before. The current racing 911 GT3 is called the GT3 R. It has a hugely complex aero package front and rear, including step-wide side skirts, a wing as tall as the roof, and a front extractor vent nearly as large as the entire hood. This Manthey Racing car has a much less complex aero package. The hood is flat, the front splitter is plain, and the rear wing is less than half the height of the GT3 R's. It's also smaller in total area.Porsche is clearly not going to make a slower 911 GT3 R, so what is this? It's the 911 GT4. The replacement for the 718 GT4 Clubsport, and the first GT4 911 ever created.CarBuzz/Valnet The first hint that something new was coming came almost a year ago. Last May, Porsche racing teamBGB Motorsportsposted to Facebook that while the 718 program was coming to an end "on the horizon though is a new Porsche GT4 offering for the 2027 season based on an entirely different model." There's no way Porsche is doing a Macan or a Taycan GT4, so that leaves just one vehicle. This 911 has been spotted testing at Spa in Belgium as well as around the Nürburgring in Germany. Multiple Porsche team drivers were wheeling the cars, helping with the development work. 911 Is Up To The GT4 Challenge CarBuzz/Valnet Our spies say that this car could be called the Challenge. That might come as the GT4 Challenge or even the GT3 Challenge. The name is visible on the end plates of the wing, though it's covered in tape. The car does wear a GT3 script on the front splitter, which adds a little bit of confusion. One detail that wasn't captured in the photos was the sound of the engine. Our spies say this car sounded like a GT4 CS, and not like a GT3. The GT4 racer's 3.8-liter flat-six has a different sound from the 4.0-liter engine in the 718 GT4 road cars and the GT3s.GT4 racing, like the number suggests, is one rung down from GT3. It's a slightly slower and more affordable series, and has long been contested by Porsche as well as BMW, Audi, Aston, McLaren, and more. We can't see Porsche abandoning this racing segment, and letting those competitors rule it.If Porsche launches a 911 GT4 racer, whatever the name, it will need to make a road car for racing homologation. It's required to get the aero parts and suspension changes good and rulebook legal. That means a new road car, one that's less extreme than a 911 GT3, but still far more hardcore than a 911 GTS.Is the 911 lineup already overly complicated? It is. But don't expect Porsche to slow down the number of 911 variants anytime soon. One that's also ready for racing glory feels like a shoo-in.Porsche 911 GT4 004
