Over the course of 2025, Infiniti rolled out not one, but two wild high-performance QX80 concepts. The first one, the Track Edition, made 650 horsepower, and the R-Spec with 1,000. So it seemed clear that the luxury brand wanted a fast version of the big SUV, and we learned recently that such a vehicle had the green light for production. We didn't realize how quickly the production version would arrive, though. According to a Nissan executive, it's just around the corner.Jared Rosenholtz/CarBuzz/Valnet It's Getting Plenty Of Power This Year During a roundtable interview with journalists, including a CarBuzz editor, the head of Nissan's product planning for America, Ponz Pandikuthira, gave a timeframe for the high-output Infiniti QX80."The twin turbo v6 is already in there. It has, right? But then that performance is now enhanced to north of 600 horsepower, and that version will come out this calendar year." —Nissan Senior Vice President and Chief Product and Planning Officer Ponz PandikuthiraSo, in just a couple of sentences, Pandikuthira has revealed both roughly when we'll see this new QX80, and the performance. At somewhere above 600 hp, it should be relatively close to the Track Spec concept and at least an increase of 150 hp over the current QX80. Additionally, if the Track Spec is a rough benchmark, this high-output QX80 could make as much as 750 pound-feet of torque, which would be an increase of more than 200 pound-feet.InfinitiAssuming the Track Spec is the prototype for this new QX80, we should also expect visual changes such as the fender flares, side skirts, and front and rear spoilers of the concept. It's possible that they'll be toned down a bit, though. Different wheels and tires are practically agiven. The concept featured larger Brembo brakes that would also seem likely, and revised suspension would make sense, too. It could borrow some of those bits from the Nissan Armada Nismo. On the topic of the Nismo, we also can't help but wonder if that SUV will get the hot QX80's engine, too. What This Performance QX80 Is Up Against When it comes to high-performance body-on-frame SUVs, there's really only one, and that's the Cadillac Escalade-V. Rather than a twin-turbo V6, it has a supercharged V8, and it makes 682 hp and 653 lb-ft of torque. That means it will probably have more power than the Infiniti, but less torque. Cadillac also estimates the V will get to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, and our own testing came close. BMW and Mercedes don't have body-on-frame competitors, but it has similarly sized, three-row options with big power. BMW has the Alpina XB7 with 631 hp and 590 lb-ft, and Mercedes-AMG has the GLS 63 with 603 hp and 627 lb-ft. In sheer output, the Infiniti should compare favorably, despite being down a couple of cylinders to these twin-turbo German V8 SUVs.Interestingly, the most expensive of these three key competitors is the Cadillac, with a starting MSRP of $168,000 before destination. The two Germans start below $160,000. Right now, the most expensive QX80 starts at $112,195 before destination, and we would expect the high-output model to start higher than that. There is a fair bit of daylight between that top-spec QX80 and the competition, so Infiniti might be able to price the high-output version below the competition, which would give it yet another impressive selling point. We're certainly looking forward to getting all the details later this year.
