For years, it has provided a mix of fuel, food, retail, and rest facilities for motorists – and more recently, its sites have served as key nodes for charging EVs on long-distance journeys.Over the past five years, Moto has installed more than 1000 ‘ultra-rapid’ EV charging bays with a focus on passenger vehicle charging. Now, it has ambitions of drastically expanding this number – not only for passenger EVs, but electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs).This is part of a broader investment programme spans more than £500 million worth of investments across its national network. Following the extension of long-term lease agreements at over 10 service stations, the firm says it now has the stability to redevelop sites and expand energy infrastructure in line with growing demand for electric mobility. In a statement, Moto CEO Ken McMeikan said: “Securing long term lease extensions at 10 of our key sites allows us to unlock our planned £500 million investment programme, [having] already invested more than £300 million over the past five years.”As well as scaling up capacity for passenger EVs, Moto is planning to develop 15 large-scale eHGV ‘superhubs’. Each hub is designed to accommodate up to 100 charging bays for electric trucks. These will be strategically located along key freight corridors, and are intended to play a central role in enabling zero-emission logistics at scale. The company has confirmed it has already received planning approval for new sites in Swindon and a dedicated truck stop in Wrotham, Kent. Alongside this, Moto is also expanding its existing HGV parking facilities, with improvements to driver amenities and security.Elliot Shaw, Chief Customer and Strategy Officer at National Highways, commented: “We’re proud to have secured this long-term lease agreement with Moto, enabling us to further enhance these vital services that help drivers rest, recharge, and stay safe. This deal shows our continued commitment to managing public assets wisely and making sure they benefit everyone. It also paves the way for important upgrades, such as expanded electric vehicle charging and HGV driver facilities, supporting our vision for a cleaner, greener transport network.”transportandenergy.com
