Here’s a gallery of the new Single Motor variant of the Volvo EC40 (formerly known as the C40 Recharge) that was introduced in Malaysia late last month. Priced at RM248,888 on-the-road without insurance, the Single Motor comes in the top Ultra trim level and is RM40,000 less than the Twin Motor which got updated in February this year.
Visually, the Single Motor looks pretty much identical to the Twin Motor, retaining even the 19-inch five-spoke black diamond-cut alloy wheels. The difference is in the powertrain, where the former only has a single electric motor at the rear rated at 238 PS (235 hp or 175 kW) and 420 Nm of torque. This is good for a 0-100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds and top speed of 180 km/h.
By comparison, the Twin Motor’s dual electric motors (one for each axle) provide a total system output of 408 PS (402 hp or 300 kW) and 660 Nm of torque, which sees a quicker century sprint time of 4.7 seconds and the same top speed as per Volvo’s safety focus.
The Single Motor also uses a nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) battery with a gross energy capacity of 70 kWh (67 kWh usable) that provides up to 488 km of range following the WLTP standard. This is less than the Twin Motor that offers up to 554 km thanks to a higher-capacity NCM battery with a gross energy capacity of 82 kWh (79 kWh usable).
Both share the same DC fast charging rate of 200 kW, with the Single Motor needing 26 minutes to get its battery from a 10-80% state of charge – AC charging is at up to 11 kW and needs seven hours to get from 0-100%.
In Ultra trim, the Single Motor is equipped with 19-inch five-spoke black diamond-cut alloy wheels, staggered tyre sizes (235/50 front, 255/45 rear), a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a nine-inch central touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, a Harman Kardon sound system, a Google built-in infotainment system with Volvo Car Connect Plus, a wireless charging pad, dual-zone climate control with PM2.5 sensor and a fixed panoramic sunroof.
Other items in the kit list include Pixel LED headlamps, a 360-degree camera, powered front seats with driver’s side memory function, a hands-free powered tailgate, Pilot Assist, seven airbags, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, rear collision warning and avoidance, blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert with auto brake.
A new exterior colour making its debut with the Single Motor for the EC40 is Sand Dune, which was first introduced with the EX90. This joins Aurora Silver, Onyx Black and Crystal White, all of which are paired with a Charcoal interior as well as suede textile/Microtech upholstery in Charcoal Connect. Every EC40 comes with a five-year, unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty comes standard, along with an eight-year, 160,000-km warranty on the battery.
