It's springtime in Germany and that means that all the cool new manufacturer testing has moved from Sweden to the Nürburgring. The CarBuzz spies are getting plenty of great shots of prototypes getting put through the ringer, and the latest is this replacement for the Mercedes-Benz EQE.The Mercedes-AMG E-Class EQ is already looking fast, with beefy wheel arches and massive brakes. It's now also looking like it will have even more of the Mercedes-Benz Hyperscreen inside, instead of adding the buttons customers now want. Benz Is Going Back To Boring With New EQs CarBuzz/Valnet This is an early development car, a detail we can tell from the headlights and taillights. They aren't production parts, with simple lights up front and tacked-on red circles in the rear. Still, we can get a better look at the overall shape. For example, we can clearly see that the EQ jellybean shape is gone. Mercedes-Benz is making its EVs look like its gas vehicles, following BMW's very successful lead, and the result is this new E-Class EQ. A very tall greenhouse goes against years of shrinking glass across the industry. It makes the car look a little more formal than we're used to, especially compared with the EQE. However, it should be wonderful for visibility for the driver.Massive wheels, rubber band sidewalls, and drilled brake rotors all make it clear this is an AMG, and not the standard E-Class. That means there is a very aggressive cluster of grilles under the wrap on the nose. We can also see two big aero devices on the corners, though we're not sure exactly what the intent is. They're duct taped to the wrap, which can't really hold up to any downforce. Still, it's interesting to see that little slice of the development process. Is This The Biggest Hyperscreen Yet?Mercedes-Benz E-Class EQ Spy (20)We don't get a great look inside because of the angle, but the shape of Benz's dash cover reveals some clues. The sharp edges suggest that there is a full-width screen in this car, or at least a set of joined screens. Mercedes-Benz has been making larger and larger versions of the Hyperscreen, and even though soon-to-retire Benz head designer Gorden Wagener doesn't like them, the trend hasn't been reversed.CarBuzz/Valnet Our spies suggest that this car will deliver between 800 and 900 horsepower from its electric drive system. We're not sure exactly what will power the new model, but it's likely going to get at least a couple of Yasa's axial-flux motors. The three-motor version of that system is already well over 1,300 hp in concept car form. The next Mercedes-Benz E-Class with gas power is expected next year, and the electric model is set to come later. There have been big shifts in the electric vehicle plans at Mercedes-Benz, and that has the timeline a little fuzzy. Originally, the EQE and EQS were to get a facelift with a new electrical architecture and new inverters this year. That has since been canceled, so Benz could be in a rush to replace the now five-year-old EVs with its next kick at the can.Mercedes-Benz E-Class EQ Spy (14)
