Lexus may have created a new acronym: DBA or dead before arrival with the cancellation of its long awaited LF-ZC all-electric sedan. It's been shown as a concept for years, most recently at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, but with electric vehicle sales on the decline - or at least, in a state of flux - parent company Toyota's been reviewing what EVs need to go on and what needs to be cut. "We decided to cancel the LF-ZC development project as part of a company-wide review of vehicle development projects," as spokesperson told Automotive News. "The cancellation of this specific development project does not mean we have given up on developing next generation BEVs."AdvertisementAdvertisementThe well-received LF-ZC may have been made obsolete with the arrival the all-new ES electric sedan. Lexus officials took great pains to avoid calling the new ES a flagship models with the LS in its last hurrah, repeatedly telling media, "The ES is just the ES." However, it's the biggest variant of the ES ever, and as its aimed at a global market, it includes an executive package where the rear-seat passenger seat comes with an ottoman, allowing someone to drive while a passenger works from the back seat.Due to hit dealers as a 2027 model sometime next year, it was expected to be the flagship. However, Toyota's still rolling out new versions of EVs, such as the new bZ model and for Lexus, the all-new, six-passenger TZ is the battery-electric version of the midsize TX, which came to market a few years ago.Toyota isn't alone as General Motors, Ford, Stellantis, Honda, and several other automakers are all rolling back their EV plans between now and the end of the decade. Much of the focus is on the development of hybrids, which the public appears to be gravitating toward in large numbers.[Images: Lexus, Author]Become a TTAC insider.
