Kim Basinger bought her Land Rover Defender 90 new in 1997, the same year L.A. Confidential reached theaters and set her on the road to an Academy Award. She kept it for 29 years. When it finally came to market, it arrived with a handwritten note in which she admits that people had asked her to sell it from the very first day, and that in her heart she never would.On September 22, bidding on Bring a Trailer stopped at $91,000. The reserve was not met, and the truck did not sell.It would be easy to read that as a celebrity car falling flat. It is more useful than that. In one of the most liquid, most closely watched corners of the vintage 4x4 market, buyers were handed a one-owner, 45,000-mile North American Specification Defender with the most attractive private provenance a Defender 90 NAS is likely to carry, and they priced it almost exactly where they price every other good 1997 truck. The Oscar did not move the number. The 2014 refurbishment did.What Was Actually on OfferThe facts are clean. Chassis SALDV3240VA102249 is a 1997 model-year Defender 90 bought new by Basinger and offered through a Woodland Hills, California seller on her behalf, with a clean California title held in the name of her company. A rear plaque identifies it as No. 0142 of approximately 2,800 NAS examples for the year. It carries the original-type 4.0-liter V8, the four-speed automatic, the full-time dual-range four-wheel-drive system, the external safari cage and the pop-up sunroof. The sale included the owner's manual, service records, the tool kit and a clean Carfax report.Then comes the paragraph that mattered most to bidders. In 2014, West Coast Rovers carried out roughly $37,000 of work: the body was repainted in Arles Blue with a white top, the seats were recovered in gray textured Exmoor cloth, the headliner and windshield were replaced, a cylinder head was rebuilt, the head gaskets and water pump were renewed, the transfer case and rear differential were resealed, the brakes were upgraded to vented rotors, and the suspension was overhauled and raised two inches. The interior gained an Alpine CD head unit, JL Audio speakers, a five-channel amplifier and a subwoofer in the center console. The truck has covered roughly 1,000 miles since.That is a well-kept, well-sorted truck. It is not an original one.Why the NAS Defender Carries a Premium at AllTo understand what bidders were weighing, it helps to remember why the NAS Defender 90 exists as a distinct collectible. Land Rover sold the Defender officially in the United States only briefly: the 110 in 1993, and the 90 for the 1994, 1995 and 1997 model years, before tightening federal safety requirements ended the truck's American run. Every NAS 90 was V8-powered, and the 1997 trucks brought the 4.0-liter engine and the four-speed automatic, making them the most usable of the three years for owners who intend to drive them.The more important point is legal rather than mechanical. A NAS Defender was federalized at the factory. It carries a U.S.-market VIN, an emissions-certified drivetrain and a paper trail that no importer had to create. That distinction has grown in value as tens of thousands of rest-of-world Defenders have entered the country under the 25-year import exemption, many of them rebuilt, rebodied or re-registered along the way, and some of them improperly imported altogether. For a buyer, a factory NAS truck removes an entire category of title and compliance risk. Bring a Trailer's Defender 90 NAS results show roughly a dozen NAS 90s crossing the block in the past two months alone. That depth of supply means bidders are not guessing. They are comparing. And the 1997 comparables line up in a revealing way:A 35,000-mile 1997 Defender 90 NAS sold for $115,000 on August 1.A 1997 Defender 90 sold for $106,000 on August 19.A 47,000-mile 1997 Defender 90 NAS was bid to $96,000 without selling on July 21.A modified 1997 Defender 90 NAS sold for $86,000 on August 4.1997 Defender 90s sold for $67,000 on August 28 and $65,500, at no reserve, on September 11.Basinger's truck lands inside that range, not above it. Set it beside the 47,000-mile truck that stalled at $96,000 in July and the celebrity variable effectively cancels out; set it beside the 35,000-mile truck that made $115,000 and the gap looks less like a failure of star power than a discount for condition. Here the spread is being set by originality, mileage and modification, in roughly that order.The Refurbishment Was the Real VariableNone of the 2014 work was unreasonable. For an owner who intended to keep the truck forever, and whose note makes clear that she did, it was sensible stewardship: fresh paint, sound mechanicals, a better stereo, a little more ground clearance. The problem is that stewardship on an owner's terms and preservation on a collector's terms are different disciplines.Collectors of NAS Defenders have become exacting about exactly the items that were changed. Original paint is the first thing a serious buyer checks with a gauge. Factory seat material and the original radio are the details that separate a preserved truck from a nice one. A suspension lift and brush guard are reversible, but they signal use rather than preservation. In the collector market, money spent restoring condition is recovered only when the work is to a documented factory standard, and money spent personalizing a car is rarely recovered at all. Originality compounds; refurbishment depreciates.What Celebrity Ownership Can and Cannot DoThis is not a weak provenance. It is, in many ways, the best kind a celebrity car can have: one owner, bought new, kept for nearly three decades, documented by the owner in her own hand. It is not a studio loan, a promotional car or a brief acquisition flipped for publicity. Collectors who have followed the price of Grace Kelly's Rover P6 or Michael Jordan's long-missing Ferrari 550 Maranello will recognize the difference between a famous name attached to a car and a famous name that defines one.That is the limit this sale exposes. Celebrity provenance earns a large premium when the person and the car are culturally inseparable: a film car, a race car, a car photographed so often that it became part of the owner's public image. Basinger's Defender belongs to a different category. It is a private car with a personal story, and its appeal to buyers of NAS Defenders rests on the same things that underpin every other NAS 90. But it is a document of affection, not a document of history, and the market prices those differently.What Serious Buyers Should Take From ItFor anyone shopping NAS Defenders, the sale is a helpful calibration. The market has been paying up for certainty and walking away from anything that introduces doubt, and in this segment certainty has a specific meaning:Paint and interior originality, verified with a paint gauge and an inspection of seat material, headliner and trim against factory specification.NAS identity, confirmed through the VIN, the numbered plaque and the federal compliance labeling, rather than accepted on the strength of a safari cage that can be fitted to any Defender.Unmodified specification, or at least modifications that are documented and cleanly reversible.Recent use. A truck that has barely moved needs a mechanical recommissioning budget regardless of its odometer reading.Title mechanics.
