hankook dynapro total terrain tire reviewCALGARY, Alta. – When one thinks of all-terrain tires, Hankook usually isn't a brand that first comes to mind. Yes, the Korean tire giant competes in all sectors, but pavement tires, particularly ultra-high performance, is where Hankook has a long-established reputation both as a top replacement tire and as original equipment. To wit, the long-running Ventus performance line, is arguably Hankook's best-known tire. But Hankook is broadening its offering in other categories, which brings us to the Dynapro Total Terrain, the company's newest all-terrain tire. These aren't the toughest off-road trails we've experienced, but were representative of the sorts of undulating, muddy terrain, that have elevation changes, along with some rocks and standing water. The vehicles mounted with Total Terrains included a variety of mid-size and full-size pick-up trucks, including the Ford F-150, GMC Canyon, and Toyota Tacoma. We drove an F-150 and Tacoma, roughly splitting the seat time equally. What stood out with both trucks is impressive traction, especially in the wetter, muddier sections of the trails. The Total Terrain had no difficulty powering through standing water, and it gripped up nicely through deep mud and over rougher dirt sections, both ascending and descending.hankook dynapro total terrain tire reviewHankook Dynapro Total Terrain: Quiet on the RoadAll-terrain tires are not typically known for delivering a quiet ride, and while the Total Terrain is not the quietest tire we've tested, it is quieter, especially for an all-terrain.AdvertisementAdvertisementWe drove a Chevy Suburban, Ford F-150, and a Toyota Tacoma during the on-road section of the drive, and in all instances, the Total Terrain was a quiet performer. Road noise was still audible, but it was muted in all vehicles. My drive partner and I were able to carry on a conversation without having to shout at one another, which is a good measure of the tire's quietness.Of the vehicles we drove, the Suburban delivered the quietest, most comfortable ride because it was only driven on paved roads. In the pick-ups on dirt and gravel roads, ride quality was rougher, and noise levels were higher, but that was due mostly to road surface, not the tire.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHankook Dynapro Total Terrain: VerdictHankook is positioning the Dynapro Total Terrain as a capable all-terrain tire that delivers good on and off-road performance, all- season traction, and a quiet and comfortable ride. While we can't vouch for its winter performance, it delivers impressive off-road traction, and a quiet and comfortable ride on all surfaces, especially pavement. With this impressive new tire, Hankook is serving notice that it's a serious player in the all-terrain category.Become an AutoGuide insider.
