GMC has rolled out the Hummer X truck and SUV concepts, proving that the Hummer idea may work better when it stops trying to be the size of a small apartment. These two midsize electric off-roaders will not head to showrooms, but they show a sharper, lighter-looking future for the name. The fun part is that GM seems to understand people want Hummer attitude in a package that can fit on a trail, in a garage, and maybe even between two shopping carts without causing a minor civic incident. Smaller Hummer, Bigger Idea GMCThe Hummer X pickup measures 207.3 inches long, while the SUV comes in at 188.3 inches. That makes the truck 9.5 inches shorter than the 2026 Hummer EV pickup and the SUV more than a foot and a half shorter than the production Hummer EV SUV. The current Hummer EV lineup starts at $97,200, so the brand already lives in big-money territory. A smaller Hummer-style EV could open the door to something more useful, more playful, and less absurd for buyers who love off-roading but do not need a rolling monument to battery mass.GMC did not make these concepts soft, though. The SUV rides on 37-inch Goodyear tires and offers 13.2 inches of ground clearance, plus approach and departure angles of 44 and 46 degrees. In human terms, that means it should be able to climb onto steep stuff and drop off steep stuff without turning its bumpers into trail snacks. The pickup uses 35-inch tires and has 12.5 inches of ground clearance, which still lands well into serious off-road territory.GMCThe look also feels more controlled than the production Hummer EV. The panels are cleaner, the body has less visual weight, the exposed fasteners and removable fender flares suggest a vehicle that owners could fix, change, or dress up without needing a dealer visit and a small prayer. That’s good, because the off-road crowd loves customization almost as much as it loves arguing about tire pressure. Modular Tech With Real Trail Logic GMCThe most interesting part may be how GMC built the concepts. GM used a process called Flex Fab, which allows metal parts to be made in smaller batches without the usual stamping tools. That does not mean a production Hummer X would be handmade in someone’s garage, but it points to a future where automakers can test shapes, panels, and accessories without spending a fortune on traditional tooling.GMCInside, the concepts use stackable displays that can change based on the drive mode. A rock-crawling layout could show pitch, roll, tire placement, and torque flow. A road layout could clean up the view and stop shouting data at the driver. That sounds small, but it solves a real issue in modern off-roaders – too many screens try to be everything all the time.GMCGMC also previews a Hummer Hub app idea with connected trip tools and a scout drone. The drone could fly ahead, read the trail, send terrain info back to the vehicle, then return and dock. It sounds like a gadget from a camping trip funded by NASA, but it fits the Hummer personality. Today’s Hummer EV already leans hard into tech with features like CrabWalk, King Crab rear-steer logic, Extract Mode, and up to 18 available camera views on the pickup.Source: GMC
