gm starts rethinking what the hummer could beThe GMC Hummer EV has never exactly been shy about its hubris. Whether in pickup or SUV form, it's one of the most ostentatious vehicles on the road today. To celebrate the opening of its new advanced design studio in Pasadena, California, General Motors is exploring what a different kind of Hummer could look like with a pair of concept vehicles called the Hummer X SUV and Hummer X Pick-Up.While they carry the same DNA as the Hummer EV, they're both smaller and appear aimed at a more adventure-focused audience.GMC Hummer X Truck and SUV Concepts: All The DetailsGMC Hummer X Truck and SUV Concepts: All The DetailsView GalleryAdvertisementAdvertisement10 photosAccording to GM, both concepts are based on a midsize EV footprint. The Hummer X SUV rides on a 116-inch wheelbase and measures 188 inches long overall- the concept's wheelbase is about 10 inches shorter and eight inches shorter in overall length than the production Hummer. The pickup is similar, but the wheelbase shrinks by five inches, and it loses 10 inches overall. Both concepts have chunky bumpers and exposed black fender flares that are removable. The SUV is arguably the more interesting of the two experiments. It has an open-air roof design with a red canopy stretching over the cab, giving it a beach-buggy vibe that clearly aims at the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe SUV rides on 18-inch beadlock wheels wrapped in 315/75R18 tires from Goodyear, while the truck is more road-focused and has 22-inch boots wearing 305/55R22 rubber. Both have Multimatic shocks and plenty of underbody protection.gm starts rethinking what the hummer could beInside, the cockpit has stackable displays that GM says would let drivers tailor their digital experience whether they're rock crawling, trail running, or cruising the highway. GM's designers also created a deployable scout drone that integrates with a digital ecosystem GM calls "Hummer Hub." In theory, the drone could fly ahead of the vehicle on trails or remote terrain, scouting obstacles and helping drivers navigate difficult routes before committing to them."Every great concept starts with a belief. Ours was this: the courage to get lost leads us to new discoveries," said Brian Smith, outgoing GM Advanced Design Pasadena studio director. "The team rallied around a working mantra of 'Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints,' and let that philosophy guide every decision. That's not just a tagline – it's the design brief."gm starts rethinking what the hummer could beBefore anyone starts hoping for a compact Hummer EV to appear in showrooms, GM is pouring some cold water on those expectations. The automaker paused development of updated versions of its full-size electric truck and SUV lineup earlier this year due to a lack of appetite for the six-figure monsters.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe company says the Hummer X concepts are strictly design studies with no production plans attached. Instead, they serve as rolling laboratories for GM's design, engineering, manufacturing, and research teams to explore new ideas, technologies, and vehicle concepts. While a downsized Hummer EV may not be on deck, elements of these concepts are likely to find their way into future GMC products, eventually.Become an AutoGuide insider.
