A little more than a year ago, Ford became the first American car company to have a car lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under seven minutes. That car was the Mustang GTD, and it simultaneously became the fastest American car around the track, period, and even beat its initial record. It didn't have the title for long, though.Just a few months later, Chevrolet revealed that both the Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X lapped even faster. Ford doesn't seem to be taking its defeat lying down, as GTDs have been seen testing at the track since then, and a YouTube channel that spotted them claims Ford may have taken the record back and then some. The Cars May Be Faster Thanks To Changes The channel that caught the cars was Stateside Supercars, which posts videos of all kinds of cars at the Nürburgring. The videographers got surprisingly close to the cars, and were around long enough to do some rough timing. Of the two cars, the black one, which the channel believes to be a European-specification car, lapped the fastest, setting one lap of 6:42.82 and another of 6:41.74. The blue car, supposedly an American-specification example, managed a 6:45.71.CarBuzz/Valnet While these lap times are far from official or truly precise, they're seriously quick. Most importantly, all three of them are better than the times set by the Corvettes. As a reminder, the ZR1 set a time of 6:50.763, and the ZR1X was slightly faster with a 6:49.275. Those times would even put it ahead of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. In fact, it would make it among the top five fastest production cars to lap the track. Both of the Fords that Stateside Supercars captured had a couple of features not found on the GTD we know, though. At the front, they have a pair of extra canards that probably add some extra downforce, while at the back, the wheels have smooth covers, seemingly for drag reduction. Those parts appeared on the same black car a few months ago. The blue car had been seen at the same time, but lacked the aero additions.Ford In the video description, Stateside Supercars also mentions that the two Mustangs had different smelling exhaust, suggesting Ford may be running higher-octane fuel. With higher octane fuel, Ford could potentially tune the engine to make more power, which would be helpful in taking on Corvettes with four-figure power levels. It also wouldn't be the first time that an automaker created a special, higher-output tune for high-octane fuel. The Dodge Demon 170, for example, had a tune for E85 ethanol. Ford Adds Fuel To The Fire We reached out to Ford to see if they could provide any details about continued testing and a possible new lap record. The response we received wasn't quite what we expected:"As we've said before, 'Game on.'"-Ford spokespersonThat certainly doesn't confirm that the company has the record, but it sure says Ford is still trying, and folks at the company must be fairly confident they can get the record back.Chevrolet Even if Ford manages to beat the Corvettes, the rivalry probably isn't over. Another YouTuber who is known for racing and taking cars around the Nürburgring, Misha Charoudin, speculated that Chevy could get the ZR1s around the track more quickly. We'd certainly be happy to see Chevy head back to see if the car can go faster, not just to keep the cross-town fight going, but to maybe displace a Porsche or two.
