Ford has issued a recall for 2018 to 2022 model-year Expedition SUVs, as well as Lincoln Navigators of the same vintage. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall notice for 419,967 of the SUVs. It estimates around 12,599 will be affected by the recall. The SUVs were made from May 15, 2017, to Oct 26, 2022.Ford's recall filings indicate teh affected SUVs are equipped with a front seat belt pretensioner that may inadvertently deploy. If that happens, the seat belt will go tight, as it would in an accident, and prevent you from moving it. It's happened to most everyone, but Ford says this issue is a problem because the pretensioner can stick. It may become stuck in the locked position. Depending on where that failure occurs, owners may be stuck with seatbelts that are too loose or too tight. Moreover, if the belt can't move, it can't do its job. Ford says the "inadvertent retractor pretensioner deployment" can also cause injury due to "rapid seatbelt retraction.Courtesy ImageOwners in hot climates, especially those heating up now that summer is here, will want to be particularly careful. The faulty parts degrade in high-heat environments, and in degrading, can lead to the above issue. Owners won't get much notice if the failure occurs, but Ford does say that an airbag malfunction light will illuminate on the SUV's gauge cluster before the pretensioner fails.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe fix is a relatively simple one. Owners will be told to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have both front seatbelt retractors examined and replaced if they fall within the date range above. Ford won't charge owners for the service, and will begin notifying them between Jun 08, 2026, and Jun 12, 2026. Meanwhile, owners can also check their VIN on the NHTSA website. This story was originally published by Men's Journal on Jun 4, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
