Ford Mustang Sales Just Hit a Shocking Low

Ford's third-quarter sales results are in, and they're up overall, but the news isn't great for the Mustang. While sales for Ford's only remaining car have risen 2.5 percent over the last three months, most of those sales happened in July and August. The automaker only sold 1,803 Mustangs in September. Not great.

That number is down 32.4 percent from September 2024, when Ford sold 2,668 Mustangs. Despite the sales increase last quarter, Mustang sales remain down 10.1 percent for the year. Ford has only sold 32,818 units this year, compared to 36,485 in 2024, which would become the model's worst sales year to date.

Mustang sales have been steadily declining for years, and it remains one of the last American sports cars. The Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger are dead, and the Mustang and Corvette are still far from being true market competitors—you can still fit a small family in the pony car, at least.

Despite the decline, the Mustang remains an important model for the brand. It's an icon for a reason, and one Ford won't let wither. CEO Jim Farley said in a recent podcast interview with The Verge that the company is "investing a lot in Mustang.... It's the best-selling sports coupe in the world."

Model Sept. 2025 Sept. 2024 Q3 2025 Q3 2025 YTD 2025 YTD 2024
Mustang 1,803 (-32.4%) 2,668 9,267 (+2.5%) 9,041 32,818 (-10.1%) 36,485

That investment might result in Ford expanding the lineup with a long-rumored sedan, a new hybrid powertrain, and even an off-road variant. The automaker hasn't confirmed anything, but we know for sure that there won't be an electric Mustang coupe on sale anytime soon.

The Mustang Mach-E crossover continues to outsell the coupe, with 20,177 units sold in the last quarter, a 50.7 percent increase. Ford has sold 41,962 Mach-Es so far this year, up 17.8 percent, but the F-Series remains the automaker's best-selling vehicle. Sales for the popular pickup are up 12.7 percent so far this year.

Other strong sellers included the Maverick, Explorer, and Bronco. They are all up 10.9, 9.6, and 42.9 percent, respectively, for the year, with Ford Motor Company's overall sales up 7.2 percent.
