New flagship Dodge Charger Hellcat will sit above Hurricane inline six-cylinder models. Massive Superbird-inspired rear wing suggests subtlety won’t be part of the package. New Hellcat arrives separately from Dodge’s mysterious Copperhead halo sports car. “The Boss is back!” screamed Blue Oval ads in 1982 when Ford returned the 5.0 V8 – and performance – to the Mustang after years of malaise. More than four decades later the time is right for a similar, but Mopar-themed celebration, because Dodge has confirmed the Charger and Hellcat V8 are getting back together, and they’re promising an even bigger show than before. When Chrysler recently teased a mystery vehicle hiding beneath a red sheet, enthusiasts immediately noticed something sticking up beneath the cover. That giant flat-topped rear wing looked suspiciously like something lifted from a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona or 1970 Plymouth Superbird. And neither of those cars would have been seen dead with an inline six under the hood. Related: Pause That Dodge Charger Order, Report Claims Hellcat V8 Inbound For MY28 Now Dodge has finally made it kind of official. According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, the Charger will receive a Hellcat-powered variant, bringing the supercharged Hemi V8 back to the model line after what has felt like a very long absence, even if it’s only been a couple of years. The current Charger launched in 2024 as an EV first. Dodge bet heavily on electric muscle, but buyers largely stayed away. The company later added Hurricane-powered six-cylinder models, giving traditional performance fans something more familiar, but many enthusiasts never stopped asking the same question. Where’s the V8? Dodge has been dropping hints for months that it was working to rectify that omission. The Hemi has already returned to Ram trucks, executives have repeatedly suggested the engine wasn’t gone forever, and rumors of a Hellcat Charger have been circulating almost since the new car debuted, the most recent alleging a MY28 debut and a V8 that comes only in supercharged form. Now those rumors have become reality. SRT Badges And More Than 700 HP The version shown to some journalists reportedly featured a more aggressive front fascia, a functional-looking hood scoop, and that enormous rear wing, Detroit Free Press reports. The package also carried SRT badging and reportedly packs more than 700 hp (707 PS) from a supercharged Hellcat V8. Our guess is it’ll get the same 777 hp (788 PS) as the new Hellcat-powered Ram Rumble Bee truck. Importantly, this isn’t the only performance car Dodge has in development. The company also previewed a new halo model called the Copperhead. Details remain scarce, but the two-door machine appears heavily inspired by the Viper and could potentially share architecture or styling themes with the Charger. The Hellcat’s return is also part of a much bigger Stellantis product offensive involving all if its US brands. During the same preview event, journalists were shown roughly 20 upcoming vehicles, including Chrysler’s Airflow crossover, a revived GLH hot hatch from Dodge, new Jeeps, new Rams, and several refreshed existing models.
