When you line up against a Dodge SRT Challenger Demon 170 at a drag strip, it's normally all over before it has even begun. The wheelie-popping, 1025-horsepower Dodge is quite simply one of the fastest production cars ever to roll off an assembly line — and that includes pretty much every hypercar on the planet. This is a car that officially hits 60 mph in just 1.66 seconds and, at the time of launch (excuse the pun) in 2023, it had the highest g-force acceleration of any production car at 2.004 gs. If you see one of these warming up its tires at the start of a quarter mile of asphalt, you better run for cover. So what happened when someone dared to line up a Corvette ZR1X against a Demon for a drag race? Prepare to be amazed. The Corvette ZR1X And Dodge Demon 170 Couldn't Be More Different YouTube/ DragTimesEvery inch of the Dodge Demon 170 is about going as fast as possible over a quarter mile. This 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V8-powered muscle car runs the quarter-mile in an NHRA-certified 8.91-seconds at 151.17 mph — said to be the fastest in the world. The engine pushes out 1,025 hp and 945 lb-ft of torque, and the Demon is covered in trick tech including a TransBrake 2.0 that includes torque-shaping capability, unique Drag Mode suspension, and staggered drag radial tires and fender flares straight out of the factory.Luckily, Brooks Weisblat of DragTimes in Florida isn't easily intimidated. Weisblat decided to pitch a stock Corvette ZR1X against a Demon 170. It was time to settle the debate over who makes the quickest US production car. Just as a quick recap, the ZR1X couldn't be more different to the Demon 170. Whereas the Dodge is a purpose-built, rear-wheel-drive drag weapon, while the ZR1X is a straight hypercar, with 1,250 horsepower, hybrid assist, and all-wheel drive. Ladies and gentlemen, popcorn at the ready. The Race Outcome Is Shocking Just to make life more difficult for Weisblat and his ZR1X, when he arrives at TX2K drag strip, the Demon of Herman Young is looking a little less than bone stock. For a start, a lot of the interior is missing, and then there are Mickey Thompson slick tires. Oh, and how about the trans tune which helps recalibrate everything with the reduced weight? The Corvette, on the other hand, looks like it's ready to drive down the shops, riding on Michelin Pilot 4 S street tires. It's hard to imagine the 'Vette standing much of a chance in such drag-ready company. Even the supercharger-whine-accompanied burnout of the Demon is enough to put shivers down your spine. But there is a twist. It's Time For These Two Legends To Go Head-To-Head YouTube/ DragTimesThe Demon gets a great start, easily getting the jump on the Corvette, it's front wheels high in the air. But, within a few meters, the Corvette gets in its stride and effortlessly pulls past the Demon. The times are simply astonishing. The Demon posts a respectable 9.305 seconds at 149.14 mph, but the Corvette is on another planet. The stock 'Vette posts a time of 8.883 seconds at 156.90 mph. This is not a factory effort, spending the whole day getting the best time. This is first try, total standard spec — it's incredible. 'Boy, I just walked right by him,' says Weisblat straight after the race. The second race confirms it, with both cars running slower times, but the Corvette winning with a 9.035 second pass. The charges to 60 mph are quicker in the second race, however, with the Demon reaching 60 mph in 1.90 seconds, and the Corvette hitting the same speed in 1.95 seconds. What a race — and what a couple of modern performance legends.
