There’s no type of car culture quite like off-road culture, so at the 60th Easter Jeep Safari deep in Moab, Utah, CarBuzz caught up with Shaun Walford (@thestorytillnow on Instagram and YouTube), popular off-road content creator and Wolfbox brand ambassador to dive deep into the scene, find out why it’s so popular, and get Shaun’s advice for newcomers still looking to earn their stripes in the great outdoors.Easter Jeep Safari provided the perfect backdrop to learn from Shaun, as one of the annual off-road calendar’s most anticipated events with major OEM support from Jeep. It’s an event that caters to newbies as much as it does old hands in the game, where showing off takes a back seat to camaraderie and enjoyment. This year, Wolfbox was a sponsor of the event, with Shaun at the Wolfbox booth at the EJS vendor expo to give attendees a hands-on look at how he puts the Wolfbox range of trail-ready accessories to the test. This article has been sponsored by Wolfbox. Meet Shaun Walford: The Canadian Off-Roader With Adventure In His Blood WolfboxFor those who don’t know him, Shaun Walford is a Canadian YouTuber and content creator who’s spent nearly a decade capturing his overlanding adventures on his YouTube channel ‘The Story Till Now’. You’ve probably seen some of his content, too, like the time he conquered the Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail - often referred to as North America’s hardest overland trail - or when he and his crew went extreme snow camping in the mountains in a Hemi-equipped Jeep Gladiator and a Toyota Tacoma on 37-inch tires.Shaun has amassed over 480,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, with many of his videos accruing millions of views, owing to the incredible stories Shaun tells, the way he talks viewers through the off-road challenges he and his buddies face, and the incredible scenery he captures along the way. He’s made adventuring - and sharing that adventure with like-minded individuals - a full-time commitment, and the results are truly breathtaking. So who better to talk to at the Easter Jeep Safari this year than Shaun about off-road and overland culture? “No Egos, Just Humans Helping Humans” - The Core Of Overland Culture WolfboxThe word ‘culture’ is used a lot in automotive terms, but just like its meaning in the context of society and geography, it means different things to different groups of people. And it’s not always apparent exactly what the culture of a particular group of enthusiasts is until you have a lightbulb moment when it all makes sense. For Shaun, that moment arrived when he was on his own on one of his first big solo overland trips in the Canadian Rockies.“I was way out there, winch stuck in deep snow, truck half-buried, and temps dropping fast,” Shaun tells us. “Out of nowhere, a random group of guys in an old Toyota rolled up, helped me dig out, shared their hot coffee, and didn't ask for a single thing in return. They just said, ‘That's what we do out here.’ That moment flipped a switch for me.”“Off-road culture isn't about flexing your build or racing lines. It's about the unspoken brotherhood (and sisterhood) of looking out for each other when shit gets real. No egos, just humans helping humans in the middle of nowhere. That's when I knew I was hooked for life.”- Shaun Walford, Off-Road Content Creator & Wolfbox Brand AmbassadorFrom that moment, Shaun returned that same energy into the community as he’d received from those strangers that day, and it helped foster his own understanding of what off-road culture meant. And the concept of ‘no egos’ is one of his foundational rules for off-road etiquette, part of what he deems “keeping it simple; respecting the land and the people.” His three guidelines are simple:Leave No Trace - Pack out what you pack in, and leave the trail better than you found it. We're guests out there. Help before you flex - If someone's stuck, winch first, photos later. I've been on both sides of that rope, and the community shines brightest when we help each other out. Communication and patience - Radios on the same channel, no tailgating, and give folks space on narrow or steep trails. Following these three rules is “the glue that keeps this culture alive,” says Shaun. The Trails Humble Everyone Eventually WolfboxEgo is something you check at the door the moment you set off on a tough trail. If you don’t, nature will humble you eventually. For Shaun, one adventure embodied that more than any other.“My hardest trip was the Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail featured in my video ‘HARDEST Overland Trail In North America.’ We tackled this remote 111-mile grease trail in British Columbia with Jeeps and a 4Runner over nine brutal days of deadfall, river crossings, and fuel shortages.“The biggest risk hit on a narrow, off-camber shelf road near Kluscus Village at dusk. A steep sidehill where one wrong move meant rolling into the river below. My buddy Teddy’s Gladiator slid and started tipping hard; we were seconds from a full rollover. We handled it with calm radio spotting from Braun, a strategic winch pull using a snatch block and a solid tree anchor (after the first tree nearly snapped), digging the high side, and airing down tires on one side. Teamwork, recovery gear, and staying level-headed got us through.”“That moment humbled us all and proved why over-preparation and trusting your crew matters most. If you’ve seen the video, you know the spot.”Why Shaun Chooses Wolfbox To Support His AdventuresBeing prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way is vital to enjoying your off-road experience. For Shaun, a significant part of that preparation comes down to the Wolfbox products he uses on every trip. “Wolfbox makes products that are beneficial to what we do. It just makes sense,” he explains, “They’re real people who actually understand why we do this.”WolfboxAt the heart of capturing every adventure, Wolfbox’s range has helped Shaun craft some of his most iconic documentaries. “I installed their G900 Tripro Bumper Version dash cam with a triple-camera system (front bumper, rear bumper, and the mirror cam) on my Ram 2500 before one of our biggest trips, and it instantly became the most used piece of gear on the truck. Off-road isn't just driving; it's capturing every angle when you're crawling over rocks or backing down a narrow shelf with zero visibility. The 4K quality, the easy swipe-through views on the screen, and the fact that it keeps recording even when you're bouncing through hell... it’s like having extra sets of eyes and a perfect memory of every line you took.”But there’s so much more to it than mere content capture, and the valuable footage also acts as a tool to learn from, or something to cover your back when the worst happens. “For enthusiasts, it’s massive value: peace of mind on the trail, the ability to review footage to learn from mistakes, insurance gold if something happens, and killer content without needing a whole camera crew.”An Entire Off-Road Ecosystem Under One RoofWolfboxWhile Wolfbox may be best known for trail-ready dashcam solutions, they actually provide a full off-road ecosystem of products catering to every facet of off-road culture and overland adventure. The G900 Tripro Bumper Version mirror dash cam ensures high-quality recording of your adventures with its three channels, offering multiple real-time viewing angles to help you navigate the toughest trails. We’ve experienced it ourselves, calling it one of thebest tech upgrades you can do to your car.More than just a trail-cam, it doubles up as a parking monitor, with smart impact detection to record incidents the moment they happen, providing complete peace of mind when something happens to your car in day-to-day life. And when unforeseen circumstances do arise, like a flat battery when you’re out on a trail alone, products like the MegaVolt 24Air jump starter ensure you’re never left stranded. This 4-in-1 gadget doubles up as a tire inflator, power bank, and flashlight, is reliable and always ready, and is one of the must-haves Shaun identifies for anyone getting into the off-road scene:“Build a solid recovery kit and actually know how to use it—winch, straps, shovel, traction boards, tire repair, and a first-aid kit that isn't just bandaids.”Wolfbox is gearing up for even more trail-ready accessories, too, and this June, will launch the Hyperflow 60D dual-cylinder inflator. The ultimate 2-in-1 solution to get you out of an emergency, this jump starter/tire inflator combo is able to handle multiple flat tires with up to 60 minutes of continuous air output. WolfboxAnd for the quiet times between trips, Wolfbox makes it easy to maintain your rig, with tools like the MegaFlow 200 air duster helping with post-adventure dust removal inside and outside the cabin and pre-trail checks. A clean rig will help you spot potential leaks and failure points, preventing problems rather than having you react to them. Shaun’s Advice For Newbies In The Off-Road Scene WolfboxIn addition to the recovery kit Shaun mentioned, he has three additional tips for those getting into the off-road and overland scene. And they’re as important to experienced off-roaders as they are first-timers:Know your limits: “Know your rig and your limits. Drive it stock first. Learn how it behaves before you add lifts and big tires. Practice recovery in a safe spot, not when you're 50 miles from help.” Practice before you need it: Speaking of the recovery kit mentioned above, Shaun says you should “Train with it. I've seen too many people with $2,000 kits they can't deploy in a panic.” Plan ahead: “Plan for the weather and the route, and tell a friend where you're going and your expected return. Use apps like OnX Off-Road, check forecasts obsessively, and have a satellite communicator. Simple stuff like that has saved my ass more times than I can count. But above all else, remember to have fun. It’s what off-roading, and events like Easter Jeep Safari are all about. As Shaun puts it:“It’s the ultimate melting pot of everything I love about this world. You've got hardcore rock crawlers, overland families with kids and dogs, brand-new Jeep owners, and grizzled veterans all sharing the same red dirt in Moab. It's about the vibe: trail stories around the fire, random high-fives when you make a tough line, and that electric energy of thousands of rigs rolling out at dawn together.”Before you go on your next overland adventure, make sure you’re kitted out for whatever the road less traveled has to throw at you, with exclusive discounts now available on select Wolfbox products:- Record every second from multiple angles with the G900 Tripro Bumper Version mirror dash cam and save 20% when you use code “WBGUARD20”- Don’t get stranded with a dead battery or flat tires.
