A mechanic says he ultimately decided to stop offering Groupon promotions at his shop. The reason why is touching on a debate about the price of oil and whether it's safe to buy off-brand, like Walmart Super Tech. The tech, who operates Mozalez Auto Repair (@mozalez_autorepair), shared a TikTok video about a customer who needed their oil changed in a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The woman sent her daughter with the Groupon to Mozalez for service, however, they must’ve not read the Groupon’s verbiage. It stated that the job only covers five quarts of oil, and any additional oil had to be purchased from the repair shop at $10 per quart. Because the Suburban took around seven and a half to eight quarts of oil, the customer would have to pay another $25-$30. The daughter called her mother and put the mechanic on the phone to explain, but the mother wasn’t happy about having to pay extra. Commenters Sound Off People had varying opinions on the situation. One said that the customer had every right to be angry about the price, writing, "$10 a quart? And you get mad?" The mechanic highlighted this comment and said that folks who want to get their oil changed are more than welcome to buy their own and bring it in. "Yes sir, $10 a quart. Okay, if you go to Walmart, you can pay your $7.99, your $5.99, for that Ecotech whatever brand they have on the shelf. Not here," he says at the end of his clip. One commenter said the markup was justified because it saves customers time. "People forget. They can get in their car, drive to the store, pick out their oil, bring it to the front, wait in line, pay, then drive back home. Why would you sell it for the exact same amount as the store? Of course there’s markup. It’s convenience," they wrote. Is Walmart Super Tech Oil Any Good? While Mozalez Auto refers to Walmart’s brand as "Eco Tech," it seems he’s referring to its Super Tech motor oil. The chain sells a five-quart jug of Full Synthetic SAE 5W-30 for $20, or $4 per quart. Which is around 25% cheaper than a Valvoline version that costs $5.66/quart. Some folks praised Super Tech for its value and efficacy. "Walmart oil has great testing results. Next we buy 0w20 at $2.83/qt and sell it for $8.99—every 4th oil change is free. There are some good bulk oil deals to be had," one person remarked. YouTuber Vehicle Freak also believes Walmart oil is a safe bet, saying, "Super Tech oil is good and you can use it without having to worry about damaging your engine. It’s available in most SAE grades and has several variants to cover a wider range of engine types." In the same clip, the YouTuber says that they have found "hundreds of positive reviews with satisfied customers" who have used Super Tech oil "exclusively" on their cars "for hundreds of thousands of miles." Vehicle Freak went on to state that the difference in motor oil brands is "hardly noticeable." Ultimately, he holds that "regular oil changes matter far more than the oil brand." So, in short, it’s better to get timely Super Tech fluid swaps than to spend more on a name-brand and blow past the recommended maintenance window. As one Redditor put it, "For the past 2 years, I have used Super Tech synthetic motor oil for my vehicle which has over 200k miles (and still going). No issues at all with the Super Tech motor oil. But I always use the vehicle's OEM oil filter." Another agreed, "Better to buy cheap synthetic and change it often (3-5k) than brand-name oil and change it at 10k."
