The BMW X3 had almost ten times more sales than the BMW iX in the first quarter (17,767 versus 1,788), but is the new iX3 going to shake things up? Based on the key facts we’ve seen released about it, it should! The new iX3 is coming in a whopping $5,000 cheaper than the comparable version of the gas-powered BMW X3. That said, it’s still about $10,000 more than the base BMW X3, so we’ll see. It should be noted that the BMW X3 didn’t always outsell its in-house electric competitor by so much. In the first quarter of 2025, for example, the X3 had 11,235 sales while the iX had 3,626 — so, just a little more than three times as many sales. And the iX3 raises the bar in key ways. Whereas the iX had a starting price of $75,150, the new iX3 will start at $61,500. Yes, it’s still not a cheap vehicle, but it’s a BMW SUV, not a Nissan Sentra. A $14,000 lower price is significant, though. The iX3 also offers 434 miles of range, whereas the range of the BMW iX was rated between 283 and 312 miles. I don’t really see the need for more than 280 miles of range anyway, but a lot of buyers do value all that extra range significantly, and perhaps even held off on buying an EV until they could get one with 400+ miles of range. The BMW iX3 has had very strong consumer demand in Europe, and one would assume that it could see a lot of sales in the US as well. The 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive comes to the US market in September. You can simply reserve one for now. “Even at the starting price, the iX3 brings the pioneering Panoramic iDrive user experience powered by BMW Operating System X, class-leading driving dynamics enabled by the Heart of Joy superbrain, and an 800V architecture that allows up to 400 kW charging at DC fast charging stations,” BMW shared last month. “The iX3 utilizes sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology comprised of highly efficient electric motors, fundamentally new high-voltage batteries with more energy-dense cylindrical cells, and an 800V architecture. This drive technology reduces energy losses by 40% compared to fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, weight by 10%, and manufacturing costs by 20%.” With 400 kW charging, a driver can add about 185 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Good luck going to the bathroom and grabbing a snack or coffee in that time. Here’s more on standard equipment as well as additional options for the iX3: Major standard equipment. I have a feeling dealers, lack of supply, and lack of consumer awareness will keep that from happening initially. However, BMW could be much closer to Cadillac’s level for the share of its sales that are electric — 28.3% of Cadillac’s US sales were electric in 2025, compared to 10.9% of BMW’s sales. BMW was once the leader in that metric. Let’s see what the iX3 can do in the US. And then there’s the potential for BMW to bring more disruptive Neue Klasse vehicles to market here.
