Bentley Torcal TeaserThe Torcal will out-accelerate every Bentley before it, but Crewe says the numbers matter less than how effortlessly it delivers them. The Torcal will be Bentley's quickest, most powerful car, but its output will remain below 1,000 hp.It shares its 800-volt platform, 113-kWh battery—and possibly more—with the Porsche Cayenne Electric.Bentley says comfort and effortless power, not headline numbers, will distinguish the Torcal from its Porsche sibling.Bentleys have traditionally felt understressed with ample performance in reserve thanks to their powerful engines. As Bentley moves into the electric age, it wants to imbue its EVs with the same kind of character. In fact, electric power may suit Bentley's character even better than combustion both in terms of effortlessness and outright performance. The Crewe-based manufacturer has just revealed that its first EV, the Torcal SUV, will be its most powerful and quickest-accelerating vehicle ever. That means it will sprint even faster than the 771-horsepower Continental GT Speed, which can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in 3.1 seconds.Bentley Torcal TeaserWe don't know how much quicker the Torcal will be, but we don't have long to wait since it will officially be unveiled on September 23. A lot is riding on its shoulders, since it may be Bentley's only EV until 2030, after the manufacturer reportedly abandoned plans to build four out of five EVs.AdvertisementAdvertisementBut as quick as the Torcal will be, Bentley spends little time celebrating this record. In the press release accompanying these teaser shots, it says the Torcal's performance has been engineered "within the limits of comfort." Its defining quality is supposed to be how its power arrives: instantly, seamlessly, like in any performance EV, but in this case also without disturbing the people inside. However, occupants will certainly feel the combined forces from its strong acceleration and cornering ability. The Torcal is built on the same 800-volt platform as the Porsche Cayenne Electric, sharing its 119-inch wheelbase and113-kilowatt-hour battery pack with 108 kWh of usable capacity. The Cayenne EV delivers bonkers acceleration, especially in Turbo trim with a combined output of 1,139 hp and 1,106 lb-ft (1,500 Nm), sending the 5,831-pound (2,645-kg) SUV to 62 mph in 2.5 seconds. It was independently tested to 60 mph (96 km/h), which it reached in a face-bending 2.1 seconds.More On ThisWho Needs Leather? Speaking to Evo on the sidelines of a prototype ride event, Torcal product line director Martin Page said Bentley had avoided chasing figures for their own sake and that "there won't be a model with 1000 horsepower."Page confirmed the Torcal would have over 370 miles of WLTP range and more than 838 hp and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm), but didn't give exact figures.Bentley Torcal 2026Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric configurationComparing photos of camouflaged Torcal prototypes with the already released Cayenne, it appears their connection may run deeper than a shared platform. From the side, the shape of their greenhouse appears virtually identical, as do the doors and the side windows. We'll have to see both side by side in person to really tell if that's so, but the Torcal may be more of a Porsche than Bentley would like to admit. It looks like the Torcal has different front and rear ends, and Bentley has changed the overhangs to give it a longer tail and shorter nose, making it look more distinct and more like a traditional Bentley.Bentley Torcal InteriorInside, the Torcal will share the Cayenne's unusual Flow Display, but the rest of the interior will be typical Bentley. It will be available with the finest leathers but also Merino wool upholstery, as well as wood veneer made from walnut offcuts and recycled paper. Its artificial acceleration soundtrack was created from orchestral instruments rather than sampled engine (or motor) noise.AdvertisementAdvertisementMaking an EV accelerate quickly is the easy part. We'll have to wait and see how the UK manufacturer adopts and adapts the Cayenne EV's bones and tunes the platform to deliver a distinctly Bentley experience. It needs to be calmer, richer, and more special in order to justify its predictably higher price tag than the Cayenne's, which starts at $111,350 and goes up to $170,350 before you so much as look at the options list.
