U.S.-Bound Audi A6 Allroad Looks BeefyAudiThe Audi A6 Allroad has long filled a very specific niche: more rugged than the usual station wagon, but more conventionally car-like than the usual crossover. Not only does that very specific market placement make it a hit among the world's Avant enthusiasts, it also insulates the Allroad against the usual questions that European automakers raise about bringing their wagons to America. That is continuing for another generation, too, as the sharp-looking all-new A6 Allroad is, like its predecessors, bound for the U.S. market.AudiA representative from Audi tells Road & Track that the A6 Allroad seen here will be headed Stateside in 2027. Specifics for this market will be shared closer to the model's introduction, but we know from today's global debut that the model sold in Europe will come with a standard adaptive air suspension and all-wheel steering. We also know that the Allroad is four inches wider and rides 1.3 inches higher than its more conventional Avant relative, playing a big part in the new wagon's muscular look.In Europe, at least, two powertrains are available. The 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 that makes 295 hp and 428 lb-ft seems highly unlikely to come to America, but the plug-in gasoline hybrid that uses a 2.0-liter inline-four, an electric motor, and a 20.7-kWh (net) battery to put out a combined 362 hp and 369 lb-ft while also delivering a WLTP-estimated electric range of 59 miles could be more likely for the U.S. All-wheel drive is standard either way.AudiThe decision to bring the Allroad to America is a departure from the basic A6 Avant first shown off last March, which remains forbidden fruit for American buyers. Audi did announce the A6 sedan for the American market shortly afterward, so the Allroad will join that more conventional model in the American mid-sized lineup. That sedan starts at $65,395 after a destination charge, so expect the Allroad to start slightly higher.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile the Allroad is likely to be the best-selling Audi wagon in America, enthusiasts in the country may still get one more long-roofed A6 relative. Audi finally chose to bring the RS6 Avant to America in 2019, leading a resurgence of popularity for mid-sized performance wagons in the market that has since continued with the BMW M5 Touring. We know a new RS6 is coming soon, and we know it is going to be distinct from the new RS5—so here's hoping another RS6 Avant destined for America could be revealed soon.See our full Audi A6 Allroad photo gallery here. You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
