These latest super SUVs introduce Mercedes’ new M177 EVO V8 engine. Both models produce 603 hp and 627 lb-ft from their twin-turbo V8. A 48-volt starter-generator is also used, adding 23 hp and 151 lb-ft. Less than three months after Mercedes revealed the facelifted GLE and GLE Coupe, as well as a new GLS, the bonkers GLE 63 S and GLS 63 models from AMG have been presented. With shared powertrains, the duo combines power, performance, and luxury in a way that only a Mercedes-AMG can. Pricing details have yet to be announced. Driving both SUVs is Mercedes’ new M177 EVO engine, a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft that recently premiered in the updated S-Class and is set to be introduced across a slew of updated AMG models. It delivers the same 603 hp as the old V8 but is more efficient and, thanks to the new crank, provides better response. Working alongside the new boosted V8 is an integrated starter generator and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, adding an extra 23 hp and 151 lb-ft (205 Nm) of torque. Both models use the latest AMG Speedshift TCT nine-speed transmission and 4Matic+ all-wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution. 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S SUV/Coupe Plant the throttle, and the GLE version can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph (280 km/h). The bigger GLS 63 hits the same 174 mph (280 km/h) but is slightly slower to 60 mph, taking 3.9 seconds to reach that mark. In addition to rocking a beastly new powertrain, the latest AMG SUVs feature Ride Control+ air suspension with adaptive damping and several modes. These include a Trail setting where the ride height is increased by 2.2 inches, making it ideal for off-road, but not that many GLE or GLS owners will ever leave well-sealed roads. In the Sport, Sport+, and Comfort modes, the ride height is lowered by 0.4 inches relative to the standard position. 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 Working alongside the air suspension is AMG Active Ride Control, which aims to minimize body movements. Fully variable torque distribution and an electronically controlled locking rear differential should also ensure the SUVs handle well, despite their size. Do They Look Any Different? As you’d imagine, visual changes have been made to both, though they’re not as in-your-face as those on some other AMG-branded models. The GLE versions include a blacked-out front grille and reshaped air intakes, while the GLS sticks with a slightly more traditional chrome grille. Both sit on distinctive wheels, available at up to 22 inches for the GLE and 23 inches for the GLS, and include the quad tailpipes you’d expect of an AMG model. Tweaks have also been made to the cabins of the two super SUVs, including the latest AMG Performance steering wheel, offered in leather, microfiber, or a combination of both. Distinctive upholstery options are also available, as is plenty of carbon fiber trim.
